In a New York apartment, two brilliant young men, Brandon and Philip, prepare to host guests for an end-of-term party. Their theories, learned from their former teacher, make them feel superior to everyone else. Between them lies a secret they share alone and must keep hidden as the evening goes on. The guest they fear most is none other than their former professor, Rupert Cadell, played by James Stewart, a shrewd man who insists the perfect crime does not exist. Brandon and Philip need the party to go exactly as planned, but the tension grows with every passing minute.

Trivia about Rope

The film was shot in eleven long takes lasting between two and ten minutes each, with ten cuts in total, five of which are hidden and five of which are visible.

About 8000 incandescent bulbs and 200 neon lights were used to illuminate the small windows of the buildings in the Manhattan miniature.

Cary Grant was the first actor offered the role of Rupert Cadell, but RKO Pictures had an exclusive contract with him and he could not accept it.

According to Warner Bros. records, the film grossed $2,028,000 in the United States and $720,000 overseas.

According to Hitchcock, Farley Granger had trouble speaking his lines while playing the piano at the same time, so many of the notes he played were wrong.

Filming was halted for a day when one of the movable walls of the set did not shift in time and the camera crashed into it, damaging its friction head.

The props and the apartment walls had to be moved during takes to let the camera through; James Stewart even asked why tickets weren't being sold to watch the performance.

Hitchcock appears as a man walking down the sidewalk after the opening credits, although he had initially planned to include his silhouette in a neon sign.
