The most terrifying movie of all time is a true story.

Three film students, Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams and Joshua Leonard, prepare to shoot a documentary as their thesis project. Its subject is the legend of the Blair Witch, a woman accused of witchcraft and killed in 1785. For two centuries, the residents of Burkittsville, formerly called Blair, have blamed her for paranormal events in the area. The young filmmakers want to find out whether the myth has any truth to it, so they travel to Maryland with their recording equipment and begin interviewing townspeople. Directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, the film is presented as footage recorded by the group itself during that investigation.

Trivia about The Blair Witch Project

The three actors used their real names instead of fictional ones, something Donahue has come to regret. In 2014, she revealed that this made it harder for her to find new roles.

According to Sánchez, by the time principal photography wrapped, between 20,000 and 25,000 dollars had been spent, while Richard Corliss of Time magazine estimated a budget of 35,000.

USA Today reported that it was the first movie to go viral, even though it was made before many of the technologies that make that phenomenon possible existed.

Artisan wanted to change the original ending because test audiences were confused. The directors and Williams filmed four alternate endings, one of them with gory elements.

Actress Heather Donahue won the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress at the 20th ceremony. Producers Robin Cowie and Gregg Hale were nominated for Worst Picture.

To choose the three leads, the directors auditioned about 2,000 people before selecting Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael C. Williams.

Filming lasted eight days, and the actors shot part of the footage on their own, while the crew created situations to provoke spontaneous reactions.

The film grossed approximately $248.6 million worldwide, including $140.5 million in the United States and Canada.

Quotes by The Blair Witch Project

I hate crossing streams on logs. If I never cross another stream on a log for the rest of my life, I will die a happy girl!
I could help you, but I'd rather stand here and record.
[looking through Heather's camera] It's not the same on film is it? I mean, you know it's real, but it's like looking through the lens gives you some sort of protection from what's on the other side.
[observing stick figurine twanas] No redneck is this creative.
[After Heather and Josh hit Michael in rage for throwing away the map] The map wasn't doing shit all day! THAT MAP WAS USELESS! THAT MAP WAS USELESS!
[screaming, as she catches a glimpse of the Blair Witch] OH, MY GOD! WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?!?! WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?!?!
