In 1948, unemployed music teacher Clément Mathieu takes a job as a supervisor at a reform school for young offenders. He encounters a harsh disciplinary regime imposed by the headmaster, which clashes with his ideas about teaching. The students live under constant control and trust no adult. Mathieu must decide how to act with this group of boys and what he can do with his musical training in such a place. The film is directed by Christophe Barratier and stars Gérard Jugnot. In 2004, orchestra conductor Pierre Morhange learns of his mother's death just before a concert in the United States. He returns to France for the funeral, where an old friend, Pépinot, visits him with a diary that belonged to his former teacher, Clément Mathieu.
