In an alternate London, ghosts called visitors have been rising from their graves for half a century. This phenomenon, known as The Problem, has slowed technological progress, and people still record on cassette tapes. Because adults over 20 cannot perceive them, young people work for licensed agencies that detect and eliminate them. Lucy Carlyle, a teenager with psychic abilities, runs away from home and arrives in the capital to join one of these agencies. There she finds Lockwood & Co., a small agency run by three young people with no adult supervision. When a job ends in a fire, the team must raise 60 000 pounds in two weeks. To get by, she takes on increasingly dangerous missions and gets drawn into a conspiracy.
