What Season 1 of Pachinko
The series begins in Korea during the 1910s, under Japanese colonial occupation. In Yeongdo, a small fishing village in Busan, Sunja is born to Hoonie and Yangjin. The family lives somewhat better than their neighbors thanks to a boarding house inherited from her grandparents. Hoonie was born with a cleft lip and other physical defects, and only thanks to that position was able to marry. While many Koreans survive amid oppression and misery, her parents work to protect Sunja. She grows up and meets Hansu, who opens her eyes to the world, though her dreams come at a price. Solomon tries to profit from his Korean identity. Kim Min-ha and Youn Yuh-jung bring Sunja to life at different stages of her life.
