Abhay Bethiganti wasn't chasing fame when he started working the stages of Hyderabad. In 2016, the release of Pelli Choopulu abruptly and without warning changed his career path. He played Vishnu with a naturalness that Telangana's commercial cinema rarely allowed its supporting actors.
That role gave him a hard-to-shake label. But the scripts that came his way kept repeating the same comic-relief formula over and over. He wanted to be more than the funny friend of whichever lead actor was on top.
Nobody expected him to make the leap to directing so soon.
In 2017, he appeared in Mahanubhavudu and kept piling up hours on set in mid-budget productions. He learned to watch how cameras moved while everyone else was running through their lines. For Bethiganti, cinema was always more about inner rhythm than brilliant dialogue.
Before shooting his first feature film, he spent years studying life in the villages of rural India. In 2019, he had a role in George Reddy, where the tone was much darker and more political. That experience taught him that raw aesthetics worked better than the artificial shine of studios.
And so came the project that would define his professional maturity. In 2023, he wrote, directed and starred in Ramanna Youth. The film moved away from big dance numbers to focus on grassroots politics and the aspirations of young people in rural areas.
Shooting the film was a battle against the budget.
But the final result on screen revealed a filmmaker who knew exactly where to place the camera to make audiences uneasy. He didn't use big stars for the supporting roles. He preferred to work with unknown faces from the villages where they shot, to keep the story authentic.
Bethiganti believes an actor who knows nothing about lenses is incomplete. So he divides his time between acting and writing new scripts that steer clear of mandatory happy endings. In 2024, his name began to circulate in independent production circles as a safe bet for low-budget projects.
The industry tends to punish those who try to do too many things at once. Bethiganti has avoided that setback by keeping a low profile and a work ethic built on constant rehearsal.
Betting on technical independence was his best decision.
In 2025, his schedule moved away from romantic comedies to focus on socially driven stories. The final cut of his feature directing debut was completed after ninety days of intensive work in the editing room.
