M. Nassar never set foot on a film set until military discipline became too narrow for him. Before becoming the most respected supporting face in Indian cinema, he served in the Air Force and worked for the Taj hotel group. But his real training took place at the Film and Television Institute of Tamil Nadu.
There he learned that acting is not posing.
In 1985 he debuted in Kalyana Agathigal under the direction of K. Balachander. It was not an easy path, since his physique didn't fit the romantic hero standard that dominated the Madras film industry. So he took refuge in villain roles with an intensity that unsettled audiences.
The film Nayakan changed his public image forever in 1987. He played a police officer and managed to hold Kamal Haasan's gaze without blinking. And he did it without resorting to the usual shouting of commercial cinema at the time.
He didn't settle for waiting for calls from other directors. In 1995 he wrote and directed Avatharam, a film centered on street folk art that critics praised to the skies. That financial setback shaped the way he understood the film business for the rest of his life.
The industry turned its back on him as a director.
But Nassar the actor emerged stronger from that crisis. During the 1990s he became indispensable to directors such as Mani Ratnam. In 1995 he appeared in Bombay and in 1997 in Iruvar, where he played a character inspired by the politician Karunanidhi. It was a piece of gestural craftsmanship that is still studied in acting schools across South Asia.
He speaks Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi and English. This multilingual ability allowed him to work across different industries at the same time without an accent becoming a barrier. For him, language is simply one more technical tool, like lighting or wardrobe.
In 2015 the whole world got to know his face thanks to Baahubali: The Beginning. His performance as Bijjaladeva, a man consumed by resentment and a physical disability, demanded extreme body language work. He reprised the role in 2017 to close what was, up to that date, the most expensive production in his country's history.
His commitment to the guild led him to preside over the Nadigar Sangam, the most important actors' association in southern India. It is an exhausting administrative role that he balances with shooting days that sometimes run past fourteen hours. In 2023 he joined the cast of Leo, sharing the screen with Vijay in a brief but dramatically weighty role.
And the gamble paid off.
Nassar has more than 500 credits on his professional resume. In 2024 he took part in the production of Indian 2, reuniting with S. Shankar decades after their first projects together. He charges by the day and keeps minimal expenses on shoots outside Chennai.
