Prabhu Ganesan stepped onto the set of Sangili carrying a load that would have sunk any other newcomer. Being the son of Sivaji Ganesan was not a privilege but a daily test in front of millions of viewers in southern India.
And he overcame it with a naturalness that stood in sharp contrast to his father's theatrical style.
The public didn't want a new Sivaji.
They were looking for someone who could laugh at himself while throwing punches on screen. In those early years of the eighties, his sturdy build and friendly gaze broke the mold of the polished leading man that dominated the Tamil Nadu film industry.
But the real transformation came when he understood that his career did not depend on imitating anyone.
In 1991, the film Chinna Thambi broke every box office record to date. Prabhu played a simple, devout man who connected with rural audiences in a way city critics had not anticipated.
That year his salary skyrocketed, and production companies lined up at his door in Chennai.
And the gamble paid off.
After that success, he starred in Duet in 1994 under the direction of K. Balachander. The film showed he could carry complex dramas, with A.R. Rahman's music sharing the spotlight with his portrayal of a tormented saxophonist.
It was during this period that he began managing Sivaji Productions alongside his brother Ramkumar.
They weren't looking for quick money. They wanted to keep creative control over the stories that carried their family's name, and that meant turning down many mediocre projects.
By 2005, his role in Chandramukhi marked a necessary shift in register to survive the passage of time. He was no longer the young hero who rescued the girl but the emotional anchor of the story alongside Rajinikanth.
He accepted that commercial cinema demanded new faces for leading roles.
Instead of retiring, he chose to be the premium supporting actor every blockbuster needed to feel credible. In 2009, his role in Ayan confirmed that his on-screen presence was still a magnet for young audiences.
Because in Chennai cinema, seasoned experience is a status that is respected.
In 2022, he took part in the ambitious Ponniyin Selvan: I, directed by Mani Ratnam. His portrayal of Periya Vellar was an exercise in restraint within a story full of epic drama and dynastic betrayals.
She reprised the role in 2023 for the second installment of the franchise, cementing her place in big-budget cinema.
In 2024, his schedule was still packed with shoots in various states across the south of the country.
Sivaji Productions closed its 2023 fiscal year with an asset diversification that included managing image rights and administering real estate properties tied to the family studios in Chennai.
