Pandiarajan didn't have the look of the Madras leading men of the 1980s. He was short, had ordinary features and a voice that didn't command respect up close. But behind that ordinary appearance was one of the sharpest minds for situational comedy in Tamil cinema.
He learned the ropes on film sets as an assistant to K. Bhagyaraj. There he learned that the script is the only boss that matters and that humor works best when it grows out of everyday hardship. In 1985 he decided he had observed enough and moved into directing with Kanni Rasi.
And the gamble paid off.
That film was not only a box office hit but also put his name on the list of directors to watch. But Pandiarajan wanted more and sought full control over the storytelling and pacing. So in that same 1985 he directed and starred in Aan Paavam.
Aan Paavam broke the industry's mold of the era because the lead wasn't a superman. He was an awkward young man, prone to mistakes, with a vulnerability that was both funny and endearing. Audiences connected with his clumsiness right away.
The film stayed in theaters for months. It was the title that defined his style for the following decades (rural stories, rapid-fire dialogue and simple staging). He didn't need big budgets because his strength lay in the cleverness of the situations.
During the 1990s, his work rate was frantic. He directed films such as Tai Maaman in 1994 and Gopala Gopala in 1996. In all of them, he kept that family-film spirit that avoided gratuitous violence to focus on village plots and tangles.
But the market began to change, and large-scale action cinema gained ground.
Pandiarajan read the shift in trends well. Rather than fighting against new trends as a lead director, he chose to focus on his character actor side. Because he knew a good supporting actor can save a mediocre movie with just three well-executed scenes.
From 2000 onward, his on-screen presence became steady in supporting roles. He was no longer the young leading man looking for a wife, but the wise uncle or the nosy neighbor who provided the necessary comic relief. His name guaranteed a technical reliability that few actors of his generation maintained.
Audiences connected with his new phase.
In 2006 he took part in Anjathe, a thriller that took him out of his usual comfort zone. It proved that his acting ability went beyond quick jokes and slapstick. Even so, comedy remained his main refuge and the place where he felt most at home.
In 2023 he joined the cast of Mumbaikar, a production that had him working under the direction of Santosh Sivan. And in 2024 he appeared in the film Double Tuckerr, playing a supporting character with the weight of his veteran status.
The production of Double Tuckerr in 2024 used a moderate visual effects budget to blend animated characters with real actors. Pandiarajan shot his scenes on a controlled set in Chennai over twelve days of technical work.
