Radhakrishnan Parthiban was never an easy fit for Chennai's film industry. In 1989 he shook things up with Pudhiya Paadhai. It was not just a film about a violent man seeking redemption. It was a bold move from a director who wanted to be an auteur and a star at the same time.
And Tamil cinema changed its frequency that year.
Before that success, he learned the craft in the shadow of K. Bhagyaraj. He worked as an assistant director and screenwriter for much of the 1980s. But his vision was too personal to follow his mentor's formulas. His early scripts already hinted at the obsession with language and wordplay that would define his later style.
In 1999, he produced and directed Housefull. It was a daring film about a bomb threat in a movie theater. Critics applauded it enthusiastically, but audiences turned their backs on it. It led to a financial disaster that nearly cost him his career.
But risk is his only currency.
After years alternating between supporting roles as an actor and more conventional directing projects, he decided to return to pure experimentation. In 2019, he released Oththa Seruppu Size 7. It's a film where only one actor appears on screen throughout the entire runtime. He handled the acting, directing, and production himself.
The film was shot in a single location (a police interrogation room). Parthiban used sound design to suggest the presence of other characters the viewer never gets to see. He earned the Special Jury Award from the Film Academy of India for maintaining narrative tension with a single face.
Because technique means nothing without emotion.
That experiment opened the door to international recognition that had eluded him for decades. Instead of settling into commercial projects, he took on an even more complex technical challenge. He wanted to shoot a single take that was not linear in time.
In 2022, he presented Iravin Nizhal. The film was promoted as the first movie in the world shot in a single continuous take with a nonlinear narrative structure. To achieve this, he had to build 50 different sets on a 25-acre plot of land. The crew rehearsed for more than three months before pressing the record button.
The camera moves through decades of the protagonist's life without visible cuts. The logistics were a technical nightmare. More than 300 actors and crew members had to move in absolute silence while the camera passed from one room to another. A mistake at minute 80 meant starting over from the very first second.
In 2024, he released Teenz. It's an adventure film starring thirteen teenagers who venture into a forbidden forest. For this project, he chose to forgo the big stars of Indian cinema and bet on unknown faces. The production relied on a sound post-production team that used Dolby Atmos technology to recreate the atmosphere of the jungle with mathematical precision.
The outdoor filming of the high-risk scenes lasted 22 consecutive days under adverse weather conditions in the forests of ECR.
