Aishwarya Lekshmi never planned to stand in front of a movie camera. In 2017, she was finishing her medical studies in Kochi when director Althaf Salim was looking for a fresh face for his comedy Njandukalude Nattil Oridavela. She took on the challenge almost out of curiosity, since her priority was still her medical practice.
That debut marked the start of a break from her original life plan. But it was the romantic drama Mayaanadhi, released that same 2017, that put her on the map in the Kerala film industry. She played Aparna with a naturalness that unsettled the more conservative sectors of Malayalam cinema.
And risk became her currency.
Her medical training gave her an unusual discipline on set. She wasn't chasing quick fame but projects that demanded real intellectual effort. That's why in 2018 she decided to star in Varathan, a film that explored toxic masculinity and harassment in rural settings.
Her move into Tamil cinema was a calculated step to expand her market without sacrificing quality. In 2019, she appeared in Action, but her real impact in that industry came with Jagame Thandhiram in 2021. Sharing the screen with Dhanush under the direction of Karthik Subbaraj allowed her to reach a global audience through streaming platforms.
But Aishwarya Lekshmi didn't want to be just a hired face. In 2022, she made the decision to produce Gargi, a raw courtroom drama about child abuse that focused on social ethics. She invested her own capital in a story that many major studios turned down as too risky for conventional box office.
The gamble paid off.
Between 2022 and 2023, her career reached a new level with the epic saga Ponniyin Selvan. Mani Ratnam chose her to play Poonguzhali, a character with physical and emotional strength that required months of technical preparation. The shoot was split into two installments that grossed over $60 million worldwide.
In 2023, she starred in King of Kotha alongside Dulquer Salmaan. It was a big-budget project that aimed to revitalize action cinema in South India. Although critical response was lukewarm, the film helped confirm her ability to draw mass audiences to theaters outside her home region.
Her schedule for 2024 included the release of Hello Mummy, a fantasy-tinged comedy that moved away from her usual dramatic roles. At this point in her career, she prefers to balance big commercial productions with low-budget independent films, because she understands that staying relevant in the industry depends on not being typecast in a single genre.
And the strategy keeps paying off.
In 2025, she is confirmed to appear in Thug Life, the ambitious project directed by Mani Ratnam, where she will share the cast with Kamal Haasan. Filming for this production began in early 2024, with locations in New Delhi and Serbia. The estimated budget for this feature exceeds €15 million in direct production costs.
