Sobhita Dhulipala did not seek refuge in commercial romantic comedies to launch her career in film. In 2016 she appeared in Raman Raghav 2.0, playing Smrutika, and her gaze already conveyed a maturity that didn't fit the typical profile of a debutante. It was a risky choice for someone who had just left the beauty pageant circuit.
The camera wanted her, but she preferred the risk.
Before shooting that first film, she took part in the Miss India pageant in 2013. She won some minor titles and represented her country at international events (including Miss Earth), but her real interest had always been in storytelling rather than the crown. Still, the model label is often a hard stigma to shake in Mumbai's art-house film circles.
And her bet on independent film paid off.
In 2019 came the project that changed how audiences saw her dramatic range on the small screen. She played Tara Khanna in the series Made in Heaven and gave the character a fascinating moral ambiguity that avoided the usual black-and-white thinking of Indian television drama. The Amazon Prime Video production allowed her to explore the side of an ambitious woman who climbs the social ladder without apologizing for her methods.
Dhulipala understands the rhythm of the modern industry and knows that stillness can be a powerful weapon. In the following years she took part in big-budget productions such as Ponniyin Selvan: I and its sequel in 2023. These films, directed by Mani Ratnam, demanded an imposing physical presence and a grasp of classical aesthetics that she handled with technical precision.
But her definitive breakthrough outside Asia came with a complex shoot.
In 2024 she released Monkey Man, directed by Dev Patel. In this production she played Sita and had to adapt to a choreographed action style that demanded physical discipline very different from her previous work in Telugu cinema. The film earned more than $35 million at international box offices and put her name on the radar of casting directors in Los Angeles.
Sobhita Dhulipala chooses her scripts with an almost surgical coolness.
In August 2024 she announced her engagement to actor Naga Chaitanya in a private ceremony in Hyderabad. The news generated more social media buzz than any promotional campaign for her previous releases. Still, she keeps a careful distance from the society press to focus on the technical aspects of her upcoming shoots abroad.
The contract for her role in the third season of Made in Heaven was signed under strict confidentiality clauses in early 2025.
