Aishwarya Rai never planned to end up on a film set. She was studying architecture in Bombay when advertising offers started piling up at her door. In 1994, she won the Miss World crown in Sun City, and the media impact was immediate.
That was the start of an unstoppable commercial machine.
Her film debut came in 1997 with Iruvar. It was a risky bet under Mani Ratnam, since critics expected little from a beauty queen. But Rai proved she could carry a complex political drama in a language that wasn't her own.
In 1999, she scored her first major box office hit with Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. The film grossed nearly $10 million at a time when the market was not yet global. Her name became synonymous with profitability for Bollywood producers.
The international press dubbed her the most beautiful woman in the world, and cosmetics brands offered her multimillion-dollar contracts. In 2003, she became the first Indian actress to serve on the Cannes Film Festival jury. That red carpet appearance drew more attention than many Los Angeles stars received.
Then she made a bid for the Anglo-American market.
She shot Bride and Prejudice in 2004 and The Pink Panther 2 in 2009 alongside Steve Martin. But the American industry never knew what to do with her. The scripts that came her way were flat and loaded with stereotypes about Southeast Asia.
Hollywood saw her as an exotic ornament, while in India she kept starring in massive period dramas such as Jodhaa Akbar in 2008. That duality shaped much of her professional maturity and forced her to choose between global fame and artistic relevance in her home country.
After several years of reduced activity following her maternity leave, her return to the screen took a while. Rai has always been selective about her appearances and prefers to work with directors who already understand her limits. In 2010, she shot Guzaarish, in which she played a nurse in a drama about euthanasia that didn't perform well at the box office.
But the real vindication of her weight in the industry came years later.
In 2022 and 2023, she once again worked under her mentor Mani Ratnam in the epic saga Ponniyin Selvan. She played the antagonist Nandini with a gestural performance that reminded audiences why she remains a central figure in Asian cinema despite the passing decades.
The second installment of this historic franchise grossed more than $40 million worldwide. The production budget came close to $60 million.
