The Rejection of the Deep Voice

In 1969, a six-foot-three young man was trying to convince Bombay producers that his excessively deep voice was not a flaw for the screen. Amitabh Bachchan did not fit the traditional leading-man mold that dominated Indian cinema at the time. His debut in Saat Hindustani went almost unnoticed by the general public, but it caught the attention of some directors with his unusual physical presence.

The industry took four years to figure out what to do with him. In 1973, the release of Zanjeer changed the rules of the game because it presented a lead who didn't need to sing among flowers to connect with audiences. That tough, violent cop role resonated with a generation of young people frustrated by India's social and political situation.

That was the birth of the young, angry man.

During the filming of Coolie in 1982, he suffered a blow to the abdomen during a fight scene that nearly cost him his life. The news sparked a state of hysteria across the country, and thousands of people spent weeks praying outside the hospital in Bombay. When he left the clinic, his status was no longer that of a simple actor but that of a religious cult figure to millions of followers.

Political Failure and Bankruptcy

In 1984, he decided to try his luck in politics because of his close personal friendship with Rajiv Gandhi. He won a seat in Allahabad by a landslide, but the experience proved to be an absolute professional mistake. He resigned three years later after being caught up in corruption scandals that were never proven in court but that damaged his public image.

But the film industry was waiting for him again, though with less shine than in the previous decade. In the mid-nineties, his production company ABCL went into technical bankruptcy, and debts cornered him aggressively. He owed more than 14 million dollars from that era, and his house in Bombay came close to being seized by the banks.

In 2000, he agreed to host the game show Kaun Banega Crorepati in an effort to get his personal finances back in order. Many industry analysts declared that moving from film to television was the end of his career. They were completely wrong.

The hall of the houses saved him from ruin.

The bet on the small screen paid off and allowed him to pay off every last cent of his debts in record time. In 2005, he received praise for his role in Black, where he played a teacher struggling with Alzheimer's. The actor realized that his physical maturity gave him access to characters that other stars of his generation avoided for fear of aging.

Endurance on Set

In 2013, he made his first foray into American cinema with a supporting role in The Great Gatsby, sharing scenes with Leonardo DiCaprio. Despite being over eighty years old, he kept a work pace that outpaced many younger actors in the Bollywood industry. In 2024, he took part in the big-budget science fiction production Kalki 2898 AD, taking on a physically demanding role that required eight hours of daily makeup to transform into the immortal Ashwatthama.

And the industry once again bowed at his feet.

Because his name is still the only one capable of drawing three different generations of moviegoers in the same weekend. The production contract for his latest film in 2025 stipulates that shooting days cannot exceed eight hours a day due to a cartilage injury he suffered in his ribs the year before.
