The weight of the family name and the first breakthrough

Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan didn't need a stage name to take Bollywood by storm. The son of legendary screenwriter Salim Khan, his first appearance in 1988 with Biwi Ho To Aisi was barely a whisper in an industry searching for fresh faces after the exhaustion of the old stars of the seventies.

But the real breakthrough came in 1989. With the release of Maine Pyar Kiya, the actor became the face of a new Indian romance and won the Best Male Debut award. The film was not only a financial hit, but also established the sensitive leading-man archetype that would dominate his next ten years of work.

That young man with the defiant stare had no idea he was founding a personal cult.

In 1994, he starred in Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, a film that changed the way people understood mainstream cinema in the country. It focused on family traditions and wedding celebrations, drawing whole families to theaters for months. The box office figures of that project, adjusted for inflation, remain an almost unreachable benchmark for directors of the new generation.

Justice and a change of direction

Khan's career took a turn in 1998 during the filming of Hum Saath-Saath Hain in the lands of Rajasthan. The accusation of hunting blackbuck antelopes (a protected species) started a legal ordeal that lasted more than twenty years. That incident was the first of a series of legal problems, including a fatal hit-and-run in 2002 for which he was acquitted years later after an exhausting trial.

And audiences didn't turn their backs on him.

In the early 2000s his career seemed stalled between legal battles and films that failed to connect with urban audiences. But in 2009 the release of Wanted changed the game for him and for all of Bollywood. He revived the invincible hero persona who fears neither bullets nor gravity, a formula his fans devoured eagerly in rural areas and major cities alike.

In 2010, he appeared on screen as Chulbul Pandey in Dabangg. This rowdy, charismatic cop character allowed him to connect with working-class audiences in a way few actors have achieved in Indian film history. His acting style sought not realism (a concept that bores him) but a direct connection with a viewer who pays for a ticket to watch his idol triumph every time.

The Era of Absolute Domination

The espionage franchise that began in 2012 with Ek Tha Tiger put him on the international production map. In 2015 he filmed Bajrangi Bhaijaan, playing a man who helps a young Pakistani girl return home. It was one of his most profitable films and helped polish his public image thanks to a script full of humanity and cross-border politics.

His ability to fill theaters became a constant, almost mathematical certainty.

Through his production company, Salman Khan Films, he has financed projects ranging from sports drama to pure action. In 2021, he released Antim: The Final Truth, in which he shared the screen with his brother-in-law, proving that his influence in the industry goes well beyond his own name in the credits. His salary per film is estimated at more than $12 million per project, not including his share of distribution profits.

In 2023, he released Tiger 3, strengthening his position within the spy universe of the Yash Raj Films production company. Filming of his next big project alongside Shah Rukh Khan, titled Tiger vs Pathaan, is scheduled to begin in 2025. The security budget for the film's shooting sets exceeds two million dollars due to the massive mobilization of fans at outdoor locations.
