Gourang Chakraborty was running from the Calcutta police when cinema crossed his path. A militant in the Naxalite movement in the seventies, his family sent him to Bombay to save his life or keep him out of prison. That's where Mithun was born.
In 1976, he debuted in Mrigayaa under the direction of Mrinal Sen. It was no quiet start. He won the National Film Award for Best Actor for playing a tribal hunter. That recognition put his name on the map of auteur cinema before the commercial industry swallowed him whole.
But hunger and the need for stability ruled the studios.
The real explosion came in 1982 with Disco Dancer. The film turned Mithun into a mass phenomenon in India and an absolute idol in the Soviet Union. In Soviet territory, it sold more than 60 million tickets, a figure that still seems staggering for any international production today.
And success didn't rest on acting technique. It rested on rhythm. Mithun introduced an electric street-dance style that connected with working-class audiences. Bappi Lahiri supplied the music and he supplied the moves at a time when Bollywood was desperately searching for a modern identity.
During the eighties, he took on one film shoot after another. He worked on twelve movies released in a single year, a pace no other leading man of the era could keep up with without burning out.
No one expected that the young radical would end up dancing in bell-bottom pants.
In the nineties, Mithun made a financial decision that changed his status. He moved to Ooty and opened his own hotel, the Monarch. From there, he ran a low-budget film factory that guaranteed profits before shooting even began.
The production companies would take him to his hotel, and he'd shoot films in record time. He wasn't chasing critical acclaim from Bombay. He was after packed theaters in the towns and rural areas where his name remained sacred. His vigilante roles in Jwala or Chandal were profitable and straightforward.
Profitability was his only rule.
Despite that stretch of quickly made commercial films, he never lost his prestige. In 1990, he played Krishnan Iyer in Agneepath alongside Amitabh Bachchan. For that supporting role, he earned a Filmfare Award that reminded the industry of his ability to carry the dramatic weight of a scene opposite the biggest names.
With the turn of the century, his profile diversified toward television and politics. Still, cinema kept room for him in select projects of real significance. In 2022, he took part in The Kashmir Files, one of the most controversial and box-office successful productions of the decade in India.
His performance as a retired civil servant in that film earned him nominations and praise for its restraint. It was the prelude to the highest institutional honors an artist can receive in his country.
In 2024, the Indian government awarded him the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his lifetime contribution to cinema. That same year, he also received the Padma Bhushan, the nation's third-highest civilian honor. The ceremony took place at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, in front of the country's highest authorities.
The actor has more than 350 films on his professional record.
