Raj Kapoor was looking for a fresh face for Bobby and found a fifteen-year-old whirlwind. Dimple Kapadia had no idea then that her first film would make her a social phenomenon before she came of age. In 1973, the release of this movie changed the look of Indian heroines because it replaced traditional saris with miniskirts and knotted shirts.
But the industry didn't get to enjoy her rapid rise. Before the film hit theaters, Kapadia married Rajesh Khanna, the most powerful actor of the moment, and announced her retirement. She was only sixteen when she decided her priority was domestic life and caring for her family.
She left when everyone wanted her to stay.
More than ten years of complete silence followed, during which her name only appeared in society magazines. In 1984, the marriage ended for good and she returned to film sets with Saagar. The public had not forgotten her, and the film did well at the box office (it grossed millions of rupees), restoring her status as a top-tier star.
By the late eighties, Kapadia had decided she didn't want to be just the pretty face of commercial melodramas. She began looking for scripts that explored female psychology from darker or more realistic angles. So she agreed to work with directors from the parallel cinema movement, such as Govind Nihalani and Gulzar.
In 1993, she won the National Film Award for Best Actress for her role in Rudaali. In this production she played a professional mourner hired to weep at the funerals of landowners in Rajasthan. It was a physically and emotionally demanding performance that moved her away from the tabloid spotlight and placed her among the great performers of her generation.
And the gamble paid off.
Throughout the 1990s, her name was tied to quality projects such as Lekin… and Antareen. In 2001, she played a divorced alcoholic woman in Dil Chahta Hai, a film that redefined urban cinema in India. Her chemistry with a young Akshaye Khanna showed that Kapadia could carry supporting storylines with a strength that overshadowed the leads.
Christopher Nolan was looking for an actress with a commanding presence for a key role in Tenet. In 2020, Kapadia surprised the international market by playing Priya Singh, a Bombay-based arms dealer. The director traveled to India specifically to hold screen tests, because he needed someone who could intimidate with a single look.
Nolan wasn't looking for a Bollywood star.
In 2023, she joined the action universe of Shah Rukh Khan with Pathaan. In this film she played an intelligence chief with a tragic ending that was praised by specialized critics. That same year she starred in the series Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo, playing the matriarch of a drug cartel in a rural setting.
Her career's longevity doesn't rely on nostalgia for her early days. She keeps choosing projects where risk is the norm, not the exception. In 2024, she starred in the romantic comedy Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, playing Urmila under the direction of Amit Joshi and Aradhana Sah.
The production had an estimated budget of 75 million rupees for its post-production phase in London.
