Before anyone knew his name, John Rao was selling pens on the streets of Bombay. He would imitate Bollywood stars to close a sale, and that talent for mimicry eventually led him to the Hindustan Lever factories. There he entertained executives at company parties, and that is how the stage name that would stay with him forever was born.
Johny Lever is more than just a comedian.
Sunil Dutt saw him perform on stage and decided that this small man had to be in Dard Ka Rishta in 1982. That encounter changed his luck. Indian cinema found the missing piece for its physical comedy puzzle. But it was not an easy road, because he had to play dozens of tiny roles before the industry took him seriously.
During the 1990s, his presence was essential in any Mumbai blockbuster. In 1993 he appeared in Baazigar, and his portrayal of Babulal changed the way directors approached comic relief. He once shot more than fifteen films a year during the busiest stretch of his career.
And he often did it without fixed scripts.
Lever improvised most of his dialogue because screenwriters trusted his ability to read the rhythm of a scene. In 1997, he won his first Filmfare Award for Deewana Mastana and repeated the feat the following year with Dulhe Raja. His style relied on facial elasticity and a voice that could shift registers three times within a single sentence.
But fame also brought legal trouble. In 1998, he was sentenced to seven days in prison for parodying the national anthem at a private party (although the sentence was later overturned). The incident did not slow his work pace, but it did further limit his public appearances outside the screen.
The industry changed with the arrival of the new millennium, and physical comedy lost ground to urban storylines. But Lever weathered the change by adapting his style to characters with more dramatic or parodic depth. In 2015, he appeared in Dilwale alongside Shah Rukh Khan, proving that his chemistry with the biggest stars remained intact despite the passing of time.
Training his children in the same industry is another key point of his biography.
Jamie Lever has followed in his footsteps in the world of stand-up comedy, and the two shared the screen in Housefull 4 during 2019. In 2023, she joined the cast of the series Pop Kaun?, where she worked alongside other veterans of the genre to explore the streaming format. Her filmography exceeds 350 titles officially registered in industry databases.
In 2024 he worked on the production of Welcome to the Jungle under the direction of Ahmed Khan. The estimated budget of the film exceeded 20 million dollars.
