Rajpal Yadav stands at five feet and a few inches, and in Bombay that usually means a one-way ticket to servant roles or visual gags. But the guy who graduated from the National School of Drama in Delhi had other plans. In 1999, he appeared in Dil Kya Kare and went largely unnoticed by the general public.
The industry is tough on the short ones.
In 2000, director Ram Gopal Varma cast him as Sippa in Jungle. It was not a comedy. He played a deranged villain that earned him a Filmfare Award and proved that his academic training was no mere decoration. But the market rules, and producers saw in his expressions a goldmine for comedy.
So Yadav took on the challenge of comedy. In 2003, he shot Hungama under the direction of Priyadarshan (a director who pushed his talent for slapstick to the limit). His face began appearing in three or four productions per season.
In 2006, he appeared in Chup Chup Ke and Phir Hera Pheri. His characters were always troubled men or victims of absurd misunderstandings. And it worked because his comic timing was surgical (far more technical than people realize).
But behind the cameras, Yadav tried to take control of his own narrative. He wanted to stop being the sidekick who gets slapped and become the man who makes the financial decisions. Theater had taught him how to act, but not how to manage high-risk bank loans.
The money never reached the right hands.
In 2013, he decided he wanted to call the shots and directed Ata Pata Laapata. The project was an absolute financial disaster that dragged his reputation into court. He took out a loan of five crore rupees from a Delhi businessman, and being unable to repay it haunted him for years.
In 2018, he spent three months in Tihar Jail over the non-payment of that debt. News of his imprisonment filled the tabloids, and many declared his career over. But after leaving prison, he returned to film sets without offering the press any unnecessary explanations.
In 2022, he returned to the franchise that works best for him with Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. His fees remained stable despite the forced hiatus, because young directors still seek him out to lend comedic credibility to their weaker scripts.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024, he filmed Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 for a salary that exceeded two million rupees per shooting day. The contract stipulated the use of his image for promotions on third-party social media and a liability insurance policy specific to the production company.
