Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia waited tables in Bangkok before anyone knew who Akshay Kumar was. He worked in kitchens and trained in martial arts at night. He had no contacts in the Bombay film industry. His entry into movies was a publicity accident after he missed a flight to a modeling photo shoot.
In 1991, he made his debut with Saugandh. Nobody took him very seriously at first because his acting technique was limited. But his physical ability was another story. He performed his own stunts without relying on stunt doubles.
And then came the Khiladi brand.
With Khiladi in 1992, he found a niche that he would exploit for an entire decade. Audiences wanted to see flying kicks and tough guys who didn't blink in the face of danger. He made eight films with that label in the title. The industry quickly typecast him as the working-class action hero.
So during the nineties, his name became synonymous with brawls and high-risk choreographed stunts. He wasn't chasing critical acclaim. He was after box office profits in the provincial cities. But the formula's exhaustion was inevitable.
By the end of the decade, his tough-guy image began to show cracks. In 2000, Priyadarshan cast him as Raju in Hera Pheri. It was a risky move (many thought an action hero couldn't pull off comedy). The film worked and changed the public's overall perception of his range.
Discipline is his only religion.
Over the following fifteen years, he alternated absurd comedies with patriotic dramas. He distanced himself from the tabloid playboy image to build a reputation as a model citizen. In 2017 he starred in Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. The film addressed the lack of sanitation in rural India.
It was a smart business decision. He blended commercial entertainment with social messages that appealed to the government and the masses. His critics accused him of political opportunism. He responded by releasing four films a year.
For this actor, filmmaking is not a sacred art but a craft of clocking in and delivering.
Akshay Kumar keeps a work pace that drives his co-stars crazy. He gets up at four in the morning. He doesn't drink alcohol or smoke. He insists that his shoots don't last more than forty or fifty days per project. In 2024, he took part in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan alongside Tiger Shroff.
And the bet paid off for a long time.
But market saturation took a toll at the box office during that stage. Audiences began punishing the lack of freshness in his scripts. Despite the commercial flops, Kumar did not slow down his output. He shot Sarfira and Singham Again within the same twelve-month period.
His business model is built on volume rather than exclusivity. He collects astronomical paychecks that often amount to sixty percent of the total production budget. It is a system that puts immediate liquidity ahead of the lasting power of the story.
In 2024, the film Khel Khel Mein earned less than expected on its opening weekend in theaters.
