Saif Ali Khan was never destined to be just another actor, but his start in the industry was an ordeal of criticism and impossible hairstyles. In 1993, he debuted in Parampara, and the film passed through Indian theaters without much notice. His voice and style didn't fit the mold of the action hero who dominated the 1990s.
The son of a film legend and a cricket team captain, he carried a heavy legacy. For nearly ten years he took supporting roles as the comic relief or the protagonist's best friend. But the industry still didn't quite take him seriously as a name capable of carrying a production on his own.
In 2001, the film Dil Chahta Hai changed the game for him and for all of commercial Indian cinema. He played a young, somewhat scatterbrained urban guy who connected with a generation that no longer wanted to watch rural dramas. That role helped him find a voice of his own, built on irony and a fast pace that didn't exist in Bollywood before.
But success didn't pigeonhole him into easy roles.
In 2004, he starred in Hum Tum and won the National Film Award of India. Just when everyone expected him to keep making romantic comedies, he decided to transform into a rural villain. In 2006, he appeared in Omkara with a shaved head and a dark stare to play Langda Tyagi. International critics compared his performance to the best character work in European cinema.
Because Khan understood that to survive the passage of time, he needed to break his image as a polished leading man.
Khan was the first major Bombay heavyweight to grasp the paradigm shift in home entertainment. In 2018 he starred in Sacred Games for Netflix, opening a door that had until then been closed to A-list stars. The series focused on the raw realism of Bombay's underworld and reached audiences in more than 190 countries.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2020 he founded his own production company to have full control over the stories he wanted to tell. He began alternating big budgets with much smaller, more experimental projects. His strategy was never to depend on a single industry or a single type of audience.
In 2023, he took part in the blockbuster Adipurush, playing Lankesh in a version of the Hindu epic that sharply divided opinion. A year later, in 2024, he joined the cast of Devara: Part 1 to work in the Telugu film industry for the first time. The production included a technically demanding shoot of 120 days of intensive filming just for the nighttime action sequences.
