Juhi Chawla won the Miss India pageant in 1984 with no idea what was coming next. She was 17 years old, and with a smile that Bombay's publicists spotted immediately. But her big-screen debut in Sultanat in 1986 was a box office disaster that nearly ended her ambitions before they had even begun.
Nobody gave her a chance until 1988 came along.
That year she shot Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak alongside a newcomer named Aamir Khan. The film worked because it brought back tragic romance at a time when violence dominated Indian screens. The press began to see her as the natural heir to the great actresses of the 1970s.
Throughout the 1990s, her name appeared on every major contract in the industry. She shot Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke in 1993 and won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. On that set, she learned that physical comedy demands complete control of gesture and rhythm.
Then Darr arrived that same year.
In this thriller, she shared the screen with Sunny Deol and a young Shah Rukh Khan, who played her stalker. The film earned millions of rupees and cemented her image as a vulnerable yet strong-willed heroine. She then decided she didn't want to be limited to being the friendly face in the closing credits of other people's productions.
In 1999, she founded the production company Dreamz Unlimited with Shah Rukh Khan and director Aziz Mirza. They wanted to control their own stories and not depend on the whims of the major studios of the time. Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani in 2000 was their first big financial bet in this field.
The film failed to meet the expectations of both critics and audiences.
Starting in 2003, her professional focus shifted toward smaller, more personal projects. In Jhankaar Beats, she played a pregnant woman in a story that moved away from the usual crowd-pleasing song-and-dance formula. Two years later, in 2005, she appeared in My Brother… Nikhil, tackling HIV in a society that was still very conservative.
Her private life has always been shielded behind a wall of absolute discretion. She married businessman Jay Mehta in 1995 in a secret ceremony that wasn't made public until months later. Together, they bought the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise in 2008, entering the business of the IPL cricket league for 75 million dollars.
In 2022, she finished filming Sharmaji Namkeen, taking on the challenge of completing a story after the death of its male lead. By 2023, she had joined the cast of the series The Railway Men, produced by Netflix. Filming for this drama about the Bhopal chemical tragedy was completed over sixty intensive workdays.
