Aamir Khan doesn't sign contracts for money. That's the first rule producers learn when they come knocking at his door in the Bandra neighborhood. In an industry where the volume of releases dictates a star's status, he decided in 1990 that he would work on only one project at a time.
Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak made him the idol of school notebooks in 1988. But that teen heartthrob label didn't last long, because his mind worked at a different speed and he sought stories that demanded more than a choreographed dance.
And then came the change of mindset.
In 2001, he risked his personal fortune to produce Lagaan. Nobody in India believed that a story about villagers playing cricket against the British Empire could work outside the country. The film ended up competing for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2002 ceremony.
That shoot in the Gujarat desert lasted months under a scorching sun, with an international crew that didn't always understand the local pace of work.
The Bombay press often calls him the Perfectionist. He hates the nickname (he prefers to talk about his passion for the process), but it describes his work method well. To shoot Dangal in 2016, he went from weighing 97 kilos with 38 percent body fat to having the body of an elite athlete in just five months of military-style training.
He avoids using body doubles whenever he can.
His influence goes beyond commercial cinema. With the television show Satyamev Jayate in 2012, he shed light on sex-selective abortions and sexual abuse in India. It was a movement that forced several regional governments to change local laws following the social pressure generated by each episode.
But the market doesn't always forgive slowness or narrative experiments.
In 2022, the release of Laal Singh Chaddha was an unexpected reality check for its production company. The remake of Forrest Gump took nearly a decade to develop and ended up grossing less than half of what was expected in the Indian domestic market. Analysts pointed to the fatigue of certain formulas and a social media boycott that hurt its distribution.
Aamir Khan chose to step out of the spotlight for a period of reflection after that financial result.
His work behind the camera has always been his real safety net. Through Aamir Khan Productions, he has financed stories that other major studios rejected as too risky. In 2007, he made his directorial debut with Taare Zameen Par, a film about dyslexia that grossed more than 1,300 million rupees worldwide.
Profitability is not his only criterion when deciding to give the green light to an idea.
For 2025, he has planned the release of Sitaare Zameen Par. Filming was structured into intensive 12-hour days to meet a post-production schedule aimed at minimizing digital distribution costs. The film's production budget was set at 1,000 million rupees before principal photography began.
