From Kathmandu to the Bombay Studios

Manisha Koirala didn't enter Indian cinema out of financial need. Her family dominated politics in Nepal, and her grandfather was the country's prime minister. But she preferred the spotlight to the boardroom. In 1991, she made her debut in Saudagar under the direction of Subhash Ghai. The film was a massive box office hit.

The industry quickly typecast her as the pretty face of teen romance. She wanted to avoid empty roles. In 1994 she agreed to star in 1942: A Love Story, and audiences discovered a dramatic range no one had expected. The film took in 120 million rupees in its opening run.

The industry didn't expect that resistance.

That project marked the start of a period of risky decisions. Koirala avoided exclusive contracts with major studios in order to work with directors who sought realism. In 1995 she shot Bombay with Mani Ratnam. The film addressed the religious riots of 1992 and sparked huge controversy in India.

But critics were won over by her performance. Her role as Shaila Bano earned her first major critics' award. She then began choosing scripts where the narrative weight fell on the woman's inner conflict.

Mani Ratnam's Gamble

In 1996, she worked on Khamoshi: The Musical. She played the daughter of a deaf-mute couple. It was an absolute commercial failure at the time. The studio lost money, but Koirala's performance became a benchmark for the actresses who came after her.

And the gamble paid off.

Two years later she reunited with Mani Ratnam for Dil Se.., playing a suicide bomber. The film cost 110 million rupees and became the first Indian film to enter the UK box office top 10. That role closed out her most commercially successful period before a decade of erratic projects.

In the early 2000s, her presence on the big screen declined. She appeared in B-movies and low-budget productions that damaged her professional reputation. The Bombay press began to write off her career while she struggled with personal problems and an artistic identity crisis.

The silence was finally broken.

In 2012 she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She moved to New York for treatment and withdrew completely from public life. During that time she wrote a book about her experience titled Healed. She did not return to professional filming until she was certain her health was stable.

Rebuilding a Career

Her comeback came in 2017 with Dear Maya. She played a reclusive woman who hadn't left her house in twenty years. It was a raw, makeup-free role that moved her away from the glamorous star image of the 1990s. In 2018, she took part in the Netflix anthology Lust Stories.

That same year, she played Nargis Dutt in the biopic Sanju. The production was a phenomenon and surpassed 5,000 million rupees in global box office. From then on, Koirala chose projects on digital platforms to avoid the demands of Bollywood's traditional box office.

In 2024, she took on the role of Mallikajaan in the series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The shoot was one of the most expensive in the history of Indian television. The production used more than 300 kilos of real jewels for the lead actresses' costumes.

The series premiered in May 2024 in 190 countries simultaneously. Koirala signed a contract requiring full availability during the post-production months for dubbing in several languages. The final budget for the first season came to 2,000 million rupees.
