Shabana Azmi was born into a home where poetry and Marxism were served with breakfast. Her father was the poet Kaifi Azmi, and her mother was the actress Shaukat Azmi. But her path was not an inherited red carpet. Before reaching the movies, she studied psychology at the University of Bombay.
In 1974, the release of Ankur put her at the center of Indian parallel cinema. That movement sought to move away from song-and-dance numbers in the Alps and instead face the country's social problems head-on. Azmi became the face of that visual resistance.
That was not Bollywood.
During the 1980s, her work pace was frantic. In 1982 she starred in Arth, and in 1983 in Khandhar. She won the National Award for Best Actress three years in a row, between 1983 and 1985. No one in the industry has matched that feat to this day.
The actress never separated her work on set from her street activism. In 1989, she took part in a hunger strike to protest the displacement of residents of Bombay's slums. That same energy led her to her most daring roles on the big screen.
In 1996, she took the lead role in Deepa Mehta's Fire. The film told the romantic story of two sisters-in-law trapped in unhappy marriages. Conservative sectors in India burned movie theaters and destroyed posters during screenings.
But the film was screened around the world.
Her acting technique avoids the histrionics typical of commercial cinema. She prefers silences and glances loaded with subtext. In 1999 she shot Godmother, in which she played a mafia leader based on a real-life figure. That role earned her her fifth National Award.
She is a figure who intimidates any co-star.
Her relationship with screenwriter Javed Akhtar, which began in 1984, also influenced her project choices. But Azmi always kept her creative independence above her personal life. In 1988 she worked with John Schlesinger on Madame Sousatzka, marking her first step into international expansion.
The industry changed, but she knew how to stay at the center of the board. In 2022 she joined the cast of the science fiction series Halo, produced by Steven Spielberg. She played Admiral Margaret Paragonsky with a coldness that contrasted with her rural roles of the 1970s.
In 2023 she took part in the romantic comedy Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, directed by Karan Johar. The film grossed more than 350 million rupees in its opening weekend. That same year, she also released Ghoomer, in which she plays a grandmother obsessed with cricket.
In 2024, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invited her to join its actors branch. Azmi has more than 160 credits in her official filmography according to Bombay production records.
