Irrfan Khan didn't look like a Bollywood leading man. In the 1980s, while studying at the National School of Drama in New Delhi, his teachers weren't quite sure where to place him. He had an intense gaze and a build that strayed from the muscular hero archetype Bombay's film industry demanded.
Before reaching the big screen, he spent nearly a decade stuck in mediocre TV soap operas. They were supporting roles that barely let him explore the depth he was looking for. In those days, Indian television was a factory of overacting and cardboard sets.
He was about to give up everything.
In 2001, British director Asif Kapadia cast him in The Warrior. It was a risky bet. The film was shot in the Himalayan mountains with minimal dialogue and an almost mystical Western atmosphere. But the result was so powerful that international cinema turned its head toward that actor with the deep-set eyes.
And the gamble paid off.
Shortly after, in 2003 came Maqbool. It was an adaptation of Macbeth set in the Bombay underworld. Khan played the lead with a coldness that was unsettling. The local industry realized that this man didn't need to dance to fill the screen.
In 2006, he starred in The Namesake under the direction of Mira Nair. It was his first major leading role in a production with American backing. He played a Bengali immigrant in New York with a restraint that disarmed specialized critics. Because Irrfan knew that in film, less is always more.
He appeared in 80 productions over three decades. He worked with directors such as Wes Anderson on The Darjeeling Limited and Danny Boyle on Slumdog Millionaire in 2008. But he never abandoned independent cinema in his country.
In 2013, he starred in The Lunchbox. This small film cost barely $1.5 million and ended up earning more than $15 million in international markets. It was a word-of-mouth phenomenon that showed his ability to connect with audiences in Europe and the Americas without giving up his roots.
And then came the silence.
In 2012, he gave voice and presence to the adult version of Piscine in Life of Pi. That final scene, where he tells his story to the camera, became one of the most studied performances in acting schools. But his work pace was halted by serious health problems.
In 2018, he announced that he was suffering from a neuroendocrine tumor. He moved to London for treatment and stayed out of the public eye for months. But he returned to India in 2019 to shoot his last film, Angrezi Medium.
Filming was physically exhausting for him. His co-stars later recalled that the actor barely had the strength between takes. But as soon as someone shouted action, the pain vanished from his face for a few minutes.
He died on April 29, 2020 at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Bombay. He was 53 years old and left behind the release of The Song of Scorpions, which would not reach theaters widely until 2023.
