Natalie Herschlag was eating pizza at a fast-food chain when a Revlon talent scout approached her with a modeling contract offer. She was eleven years old. But she turned down the offer because what she really wanted was to act, not sell cosmetics in fashion magazines. That decision changed her destiny and led her straight to the office of Luc Besson.
In 1994, she made her debut in Léon, playing Mathilda, an orphaned girl who learns the trade of a hired killer. Critics were struck by her icy stare and her ability to hold her own against Jean Reno. Hollywood immediately tried to typecast her in hypersexualized roles that her parents vetted with military discipline.
And the gamble paid off.
During the filming of the Star Wars prequel trilogy between 1999 and 2005, the actress lived through a strange duality. While the world saw her as Queen Amidala, she enrolled in psychology at Harvard University. She said she preferred being smart to being a movie star. She graduated in 2003 after publishing several scientific articles on neuroscience in prestigious academic journals.
Many thought her time in the George Lucas franchise would damage her reputation as an actress. But Mike Nichols rescued her in 2004 for Closer. That vulnerable stripper role earned her first Oscar nomination and proved that her transition to maturity was real.
To shoot Black Swan in 2010, she had to undergo eight hours of ballet training a day for a full year. She lost nearly ten kilos and suffered several rib injuries. Darren Aronofsky wanted a performance that bordered on madness, and Portman delivered work that earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2011.
That film didn't just earn her the golden statuette. There she met Benjamin Millepied, the film's choreographer, with whom she had a personal and professional relationship that lasted more than a decade. But the actress never let her private life dictate her career choices in independent or big-budget projects.
Not everything in her commercial career went smoothly.
Her role in the first two Thor films, in 2011 and 2013, was low-key, and she herself seemed to lose interest in superhero movies for a while. She preferred to take refuge in biographical dramas such as Jackie in 2016, where she played Jacqueline Kennedy after her husband's assassination. For that production, she shot almost every scene in close-up to convey absolute emotional claustrophobia.
In 2021, she founded the production company MountainA with Sophie Mas to have full control over the stories she wanted to tell. The company was behind projects such as the series Lady in the Lake for Apple TV+ in 2024. Here, Portman plays a Jewish woman who leaves her comfortable life to become an investigative journalist in 1960s Baltimore.
Because Portman no longer waits for the phone to ring with the perfect script.
In 2023, she starred in May December under the direction of Todd Haynes, sharing the screen with Julianne Moore. The film explores manipulation and the ethical limits of acting. It was one of the most celebrated works of that period for its technical coolness and its ability to unsettle the viewer without resorting to histrionics.
In 2025, she filmed Fountain of Youth under the direction of Guy Ritchie, alongside John Krasinski. It's an adventure project that aims to recapture the tone of classic entertainment cinema. The budget for this production was estimated at more than $100 million due to international locations and the complexity of visual effects in post-production.
