The weight of a famous surname in the nineties

Bobby Deol made a grand entrance into movies in 1995 with Barsaat. He was no ordinary debutant, since he carried the legacy of his father, Dharmendra, an absolute legend of the Indian screen. That first film earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Debut and grossed millions of rupees in an era when long hair and romantic choreography were everything.

During that period, he took on projects such as Gupt in 1997 and Soldier in 1998. These action and suspense films did well at the box office, but they typecast him in a very narrow range. Audiences wanted him as the tormented hero who always ended up saving the girl.

But the Bombay film industry is a meat grinder if you don't move fast.

As the new millennium arrived, his star began to fade as new faces came along. He tried his luck with darker thrillers and lighter comedies, but the results were mediocre. In 2007 he appeared in Apne alongside his family in an effort to win back audiences through nostalgia.

The silence and the internet's cruel jokes

There came a point when Bobby Deol disappeared from the top billing. Between 2013 and 2017, his career fell into a tunnel where he was mostly talked about for his failures or for his work as a DJ at nightclubs. Social media memes were cruel and reduced him to a relic of the nineties who didn't know how to age.

The phone stopped ringing.

In 2018 he had to accept a supporting role in Race 3 to step back onto a big-budget film set. He had to radically transform his physique and train for months to build muscle he had never had before. It was the price he had to pay for producers to see him as a profitable asset again.

And the gamble paid off.

The violent comeback of a luxury supporting actor

The real turning point came in 2020 with the release of the series Aashram on digital platforms. He played a corrupt and manipulative guru, moving decisively away from the leading-man image that had followed him for twenty years. It was the first time serious critics praised his ability to carry a story without relying on his famous surname.

Nobody saw it coming.

In 2023 his career took a decisive turn with Animal. Although he appears on screen for barely fifteen minutes and doesn't say a single word, his performance as Abrar Haque went viral. The film grossed over $100 million worldwide and put him back on the list of the industry's most searched-for actors.

For his work on Kanguva in 2024, the actor negotiated a fee far above what he earned during the peak of his popularity as a leading man. The production of this period film required a technical effort involving more than 500 extras for its outdoor battle sequences. In 2025, he plans to begin filming NB109 under the direction of Bobby Kolli.
