In 1993, Bombay audiences first saw a 5'7" young woman in Baazigar. She wasn't the lead of that thriller, but her physical presence and dancing ability immediately caught the attention of producers. The industry quickly typecast her.
For almost a decade, her name was linked to supporting roles that served as an aesthetic counterpoint to the era's leading male stars. In 1994, she shot Main Khiladi Tu Anari, and her image became tied to complex choreography and the most straightforward commercial success. That 1990s cinema did not look for dramatic nuance in its actresses, and she simply did what the contract required.
But the turn of the century brought a different opportunity with Dhadkan in the year 2000.
Director Dharmesh Darshan trusted her with a romantic drama that demanded a restraint no one had asked of her before. The film worked at the box office, and critics began to take seriously her ability to lead projects without depending exclusively on a famous co-star.
In 2007, she decided to take part in the fifth edition of Celebrity Big Brother in the United Kingdom. What seemed like a risky move for her career in India ended up becoming a global sociological phenomenon because of the racist insults she received from other contestants. The Indian government even stepped in diplomatically, and protests in the streets of New Delhi multiplied for weeks.
She won the contest with 63 percent of the final votes.
That episode turned her into a recognized figure beyond Asia's borders, but it also led to a gradual withdrawal from film sets. In 2004, she had already shown her commitment to social causes by playing a woman with HIV in Phir Milenge. It was a brave role, because at the time the stigma of the disease in India was absolute, and many leading actresses turned down the script for fear of damaging their public image.
In 2007, she took part in Life in a... Metro, directed by Anurag Basu.
In this ensemble film, Shilpa Shetty Kundra showed a far more mature side and a talent for handling heavy silences on screen. It was her last major role before an acting hiatus that would last more than a decade. During that time, she preferred to focus on managing a cricket franchise and creating a yoga-based personal training system.
Her marriage to businessman Raj Kundra in 2009 definitively moved her away from the frenetic film production that characterizes Bollywood. She became an active investor in sectors ranging from hospitality to wellness tech apps. And although she remained a constant presence on television as a judge on dance competitions, her acting career seemed like a thing of the past.
But in 2022, she broke her film retirement with the movie Nikamma.
Her comeback was not easy. Movie-going in India had changed drastically after the pandemic, and digital platforms were gaining ground on traditional theaters. In 2023, she starred in Sukhee, playing a housewife who tries to reclaim her individual identity at a school reunion. The film earned barely 20 million rupees on its opening weekend.
Despite the ups and downs at the box office, her interest in new formats led her to work with director Rohit Shetty. In 2024, she joined the cast of the series Indian Police Force, designed specifically for the global streaming market. In this production, she plays a high-ranking police officer and performs physical action scenes she hadn't done since her early start in the 1990s.
The series had a production budget of 1,250 million rupees.
