S. J. Suryah didn't land in the film industry to stay behind the camera. In 1999, he released Vaali, shaking up Chennai with a story of obsession and feuding twins. Ajith Kumar took on the challenge of playing a deaf man obsessed with his sister-in-law, and the film was a box office smash.
Before that debut, he spent years wandering the studios as an assistant director. He worked with Vasanth and Sabapathy while learning to handle the rhythm of commercial cinema. But his eyes were always set on acting.
Risk was her only currency.
In 2000, he directed Kushi, and its success was repeated across several languages. The story revolved around the egos of two university students, and Suryah proved he knew how to direct the biggest stars of the moment. But his personal ambition was headed down a different path.
In 2004, he made his definitive leap in front of the camera with New. He was actor, director and producer of a film that caused a massive scandal in India over its adult content. The courts even revoked his director's license for a brief period after complaints from several sectors of society.
That legal setback forced him to rethink his strategy in the industry. He tried to regain momentum with Isai in 2015, where, in addition to acting and directing, he also handled the soundtrack. The result was a strange, psychological work that never quite connected with mainstream audiences.
Suryah discovered that playing the villain was much more fun.
In 2016, his career took a turn thanks to Iraivi. Director Karthik Subbaraj cast him as a failed, alcoholic filmmaker, which earned him the respect of specialized critics. He was no longer just the guy chasing controversy but an actor with a physical presence that was hard to ignore.
In 2017, he played a psychopath in Spyder, and his performance completely overshadowed the lead. His screaming and unhinged gestures created a personal trademark that producers began to exploit. He even commanded star-level fees just for appearing as the antagonist in major productions.
In 2021, he appeared in Maanaadu, and audiences went wild over his acting duel in a time-loop story. His character repeated the same lines over and over, yet each take had a different nuance. That's how he established himself among the small circle of actors who guarantee box office returns.
In 2023, he released Mark Antony and Jigarthanda DoubleX, both with very solid box office results. In the first, he played two characters in a frantic action comedy that pulled in millions in its first week.
No one handles excess like he does.
In 2024, he shot Raayan under Dhanush's direction and joined the cast of Indian 2. For 2025, he is confirmed to appear in Game Changer and its sequel Sardar 2. The production of Game Changer used IMAX cameras for several of its outdoor action sequences.
