Venkatesh Prabhu Kasthuri Raja didn't choose his stage name or his profession. In 2002, his father and brother decided that this skinny teenager would star in Thulluvadho Ilamai because they needed a young face for a high school story. He just wanted to study cooking and blend into the crowds of Chennai.
Nobody gave that skinny kid a chance.
During his first shoots he endured contempt from crew members and the press for not fitting the physical mold of the Indian action hero. But the box office said otherwise. In 2003, his performance in Kadhal Kondein proved that his nervous gaze connected with audiences tired of muscle-bound demigods. He changed his name to Dhanush and kept working nonstop to pay off the debts of his family's production company.
In 2010, international critics turned their attention to southern India. Dhanush won the National Film Award for Best Actor for Aadukalam, in which he played a fighting rooster breeder in Madurai. He was 27 years old and became one of the youngest actors to receive the country's highest film honor.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2011, everything exploded with a song recorded on the spur of the moment. He wrote the lyrics to Why This Kolaveri Di in just six minutes while composer Anirudh Ravichander was testing some chords. The video went viral on YouTube, back when the word "viral" still wasn't used in newsrooms. That phenomenon opened the doors of Bollywood for him in 2013 with Raanjhanaa (a movie where the Hindi language posed a bigger challenge than the acting itself).
His entry into Western cinema was no casting accident. In 2018, he starred in The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir (an international co-production that took him to European film festivals). But his big break came in 2022. The Russo brothers cast him in The Gray Man as Avik San, an assassin who barely needed dialogue to steal the scene from Ryan Gosling.
She often says she would rather produce than act.
In 2024, he directed and starred in Raayan (his 50th film). Filming took place under absolute secrecy at studios in Chennai with a crew of more than three hundred people. For this production, the actor insisted that the sound design be done entirely in Dolby Atmos. The film's final budget reached 100 million Indian rupees.
