Priya Bhavani Shankar

Priya Bhavani Shankar worked as a software engineer at Infosys before anyone in Tamil Nadu's entertainment industry knew her name.

It was a stage of offices and code that didn't last long, because television knocked on her door unexpectedly. Her first public appearance was not as an actress but as a news anchor on the Puthiya Thalaimurai channel.

And audiences connected with her right away.

Giving Up a Steady Television Paycheck

In 2014, she accepted the lead role in the series Kalyanam Mudhal Kadhal Varai. Playing Priya in this Vijay TV production earned her a level of domestic fame that few film actors achieve in their entire lives.

But she didn't want to get stuck on the small screen. Despite the steady paycheck and daily recognition, she decided to leave the series at the peak of her popularity to carve out a place in Chennai's film industry.

So her transition was not a whim but a calculated move that many in her circle considered a financial mistake.

The Risk of the First Film

Her first big break came with the romantic comedy Meyaadha Maan in 2017. Director Rathna Kumar trusted her with a role that demanded naturalness and a voice of her own. The film earned more than expected, and critics noted that her presence was not that of an ordinary debutante.

Just one year later, she appeared in Kadaikutty Singam in 2018. On this project, she worked under the production of Suriya and shared the cast with Karthi. It was the moment the industry realized she could thrive in big rural productions and not only in urban stories.

But the road was not always upward.

In 2019, she starred in Monster alongside S.J. Suryah. It was a risky bet on a plot where a mouse was the main antagonist. The film did well at the box office because audiences appreciated the simplicity of her performance amid absurd situations.

The Industrial Scale of Big Budgets

During 2022, her workload was frantic, with releases such as Yaanai and Thiruchitrambalam. In the latter, she had a supporting but key role that helped make the film one of the biggest commercial hits of that cycle. She helped the films rake in millions in a market trying to regain its footing after the box office crisis.

The most ambitious project of her career came with Indian 2 in 2024. Working under S. Shankar and sharing the set with Kamal Haasan put her in a different league in terms of budget and international exposure.

She filmed her scenes for Indian 3 simultaneously to optimize the saga's production costs. Shooting for these installments dragged on for several years due to technical complications and schedule delays for the lead actors.

Priya Bhavani Shankar signed a contract for Demonte Colony 2 in 2024 with a salary that reflects her status in Tamil cinema.
