Aleksei Kravchenko broke into film through the gates of hell. He was fourteen when Elem Klimov cast him to star in Come and See in 1985. The shoot lasted nine months, and the director insisted the teenager experience real fear in front of the cameras.
He was forbidden to eat so that his face would lose all its childish roundness. The sounds of the gunfire were real, and the physical exhaustion he shows on screen was not the result of any technique learned in a school. Kravchenko really aged during that shoot in the forests of Belarus.
That boy with the empty stare embodied the universal face of horror.
But after that, the young man decided that film wasn't for him. He left to serve in the Soviet Navy for three years and turned to heavy music. He formed a rock band called Guarana, and it seemed his acting career would remain a traumatic anecdote from his childhood.
The comeback happened in the mid-nineties. Kravchenko enrolled at the Shchukin Theatre School to learn to act with control, far from the pure physical reaction of his debut. In 1995 he finished his studies and began working at the Vakhtangov Theatre. There he realized that his powerful physique could be a tool or a prison.
Then movies came calling again with roles as tough men and military figures. In 2002 he appeared in Estrella, señal de socorro, and shortly after in La novena compañía in 2005. Russian audiences saw him as the ultimate soldier because he projected a sobriety that was hard to find in other actors of his generation.
He didn't want to be just the guy who fires guns on screen.
In 2007, he joined the prestigious Moscow Art Theatre company under the direction of Oleg Tabakov. There he explored classic texts and proved he could handle psychological drama with the same precision as action scenes. His features hardened over time, but his ability to convey vulnerability remained intact.
Kravchenko's career took a strange turn back to his past in 2019. That year he appeared in The Painted Bird, a film many compared to his debut for its visual harshness and its Holocaust theme. He played Gavrila and once again proved that his physical presence fills the frame without the need for grand gestures.
Earns about 150,000 rubles per day of filming in the most ambitious productions in his country.
In 2019, he also played goalkeeper Alexei Khomich in the biopic Lev Yashin, the Dream Goalie. It was a necessary change of pace to move away from the military uniform that had haunted him for decades. But the theater remains his main refuge from the volatility of the Russian film and television industry.
In 2024, he took part in the film adaptation of The Master and Margarita under the direction of Michael Lockshin. The project had a budget of 1,200 million rubles and was shot mainly on location in Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
