Anna Chipovskaya was born in Moscow in 1987, surrounded by jazz scores and theater scripts. Her father, Boris Frumkin, conducted a legendary orchestra, and her mother, Olga Chipovskaya, acted at the Vakhtangov Theatre. But the family's intention was for Anna to become a translator of foreign languages.
That plan didn't last long. Before finishing high school, she already knew her place was in acting. In 2009 she graduated from the Moscow Art Theatre School under the direction of Konstantin Raikin. It is one of the most demanding institutions in the world, and there she forged a character that her classmates describe as disciplined and no-nonsense.
And the hard work paid off right away.
After her training, she joined the company of the Tabakov Theatre. There she performed complex roles in plays by authors such as Chekhov and Molière. But film soon came calling with offers that looked for more than just a pretty face on screen.
Her career truly took off in 2013 with the series Ottepel. Set in the Soviet film industry of the 1960s, the production put her on the map across Eastern Europe. She played Mariana and earned her first Golden Eagle nomination for this role.
But Chipovskaya refused to be pigeonholed into innocent-girl roles. In 2014 she appeared in the science fiction film The Calculator, shot in the volcanic landscapes of Iceland. It was a physically demanding shoot that allowed her to step away from period dramas for a while.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2017, she took on one of her biggest challenges in the television adaptation of The Road to Calvary. The series ran for 12 episodes and followed the lives of two sisters during the Russian Revolution. Filming lasted almost a year and demanded an emotional intensity that the specialized press described as suffocating.
Because Anna prefers characters who suffer or hide dark secrets behind a calm exterior. She also showed this in the film About Love from 2017, where she explored the limits of obsession and desire in contemporary Saint Petersburg.
Starting in 2020, she began diversifying her projects by blending political satire with psychological thrillers. In the series The Last Minister from 2020, she played a shrewd assistant who pulled the strings of power from behind the scenes. The role let her unleash a comedic flair that had until then been hidden from the general public.
In 2022 she starred in Sisters, a drama that tackles domestic violence from a raw perspective with no aesthetic concessions. But her interest goes beyond being in front of the camera. In several interviews she has mentioned her curiosity about the technical structure of scripts and final editing.
In 2024 she appeared in the series Pervyy nomer, where the shooting pace reached fourteen hours a day on locations across Moscow. The production used state-of-the-art cameras to capture a gritty realist aesthetic. The budget for this project exceeded two million euros per episode.
