Nikita Volkov completed his training at the St. Petersburg Academy of Theatre Arts in 2014. He didn't need much time to go from the classroom to a professional film set. That same year, director Vera Glagoleva selected him for Two Women. He shared scenes with Ralph Fiennes, and that shoot shaped his working method from then on. Volkov learned to observe silence before the director called action.
It was the first sign of his talent.
In 2014 he also appeared in the series Crisis. But mass recognition took a little longer to arrive. During those early years, he combined supporting TV roles with his work at the Lensoviet Theatre in St. Petersburg. For Volkov, the stage was where an actor's physical stamina was truly tested. In 2016 he joined the cast of Survive After, and his face became a regular presence in fantasy productions.
In 2018 he starred in Draft. The film adapted a novel by Sergey Lukyanenko and required a level of visual effects unusual for Russian cinema of the time. Volkov played Kirill and had to shoot most of his scenes in front of green screens. The film's budget exceeded $more than 7 million, but critical reception was mixed. Still, the actor made sure his performance wasn't buried under the digital effects.
The industry quickly typecast him.
In 2019 he shot Black Water: Abyss. This military sci-fi production put him back in a world of large-scale technical spectacle. But Volkov preferred projects where dialogue carried more weight than post-production. So he accepted the lead role in the series Difficult Teens that same year. He played Anton Kovalev, and the show stayed on air until 2023. The series tackled raw social issues and moved the actor away from the action hero image that movies had imposed on him.
He signed a five-season contract that gave him financial stability.
In 2022 he appeared in the series Eterna. It was an ambitious epic fantasy project based on the novels of Vera Kamsha. But the project that generated the most media buzz came in 2024. Volkov accepted the role of Sergey Gradsky in Knock on My Door in Moscow. The production was the official Russian adaptation of the Turkish hit Love is in the Air. The challenge was enormous, since he had to play a character that millions of viewers already associated with another actor.
Many doubted his choice for such a melancholic role.
In 2024 he also premiered the drama Breathe and appeared in the series The Post. His work pace stayed steady, averaging three projects a year. Volkov avoids personal interviews and prefers to talk about the technical aspects of framing or the tone of voice of his celebrities. In 2024 the actor said he prefers winter shoots because of the quality of natural light in northern latitudes. Filming the first season of Knock on My Door in Moscow added more than 120 working days on locations in the Russian capital.
