Danila Valeryevich Kozlovsky spent six years locked away at the St. Petersburg Naval Cadet Corps. He studied military strategy and iron discipline while his brothers got into trouble on the streets of Moscow. That military training ended in 2002, but it left an iron mark on the way he approached acting.
It was not the obvious path for an artist.
In 2005, he earned his first serious recognition with Garpastum. He played a soccer player in early 2000s Russia, and European critics took notice of his gaze. But the real commercial breakout came in 2012 with the release of Dukhless.
He played a cynical executive trapped in luxury who connected with a Russian generation worn out by materialism. The film grossed 13 million dollars in the local market alone and gave him almost total creative control over his next moves.
Hollywood came knocking in 2014 for the adaptation of Vampire Academy. It was a critical misstep, but it taught him how to handle large-scale productions. He later played Oleg the Wise in the sixth season of the series Vikings during 2019.
And so he began balancing his work in Russia with projects in English.
His ambition did not stop at standing in front of the spotlight. In 2013, he starred in Legend No. 17, where he played hockey player Valeri Kharlamov. The film was a social phenomenon in his country and confirmed his status as the most bankable face of its industry.
In 2018 he decided to direct his first film, Coach. He didn't stop at acting; he took on production and screenwriting duties as well. Three years later, in 2021, he premiered Chernobyl: Abyss on a global streaming platform.
The film cost around 700 million rubles and was one of the most ambitious productions of its era. Kozlovsky wanted an epic narrative that moved away from the documentary style to focus on the human drama of the liquidators.
Following the political events of 2022, his career took a different direction outside his country. In 2023 he settled in Europe to focus on theater and premiered the monologue Frankenstein in cities such as London and Limassol. The production preserved the essence of Mary Shelley's original text with a minimalist staging.
The London screening in May 2024 sold out in less than 24 hours.
