The frustrated pilot who ended up in dubbing

Sergey Burunov was going to be a fighter pilot at the Volgograd Aviation School, but ended up crying on stage because the script demanded it. In the mid-1990s he decided that flying fighter jets wasn't for him and chose the risk of acting instead. He enrolled at the Shchukin Theatre School, where he discovered that his gift for parody was almost pathological. His talent for mimicking gestures and voices closed some doors in serious theater, but it opened the doors to the industry's most profitable anonymity.

He spent years locked in dark recording booths. In 2004 he voiced Leonardo DiCaprio in The Aviator and from that moment on became the voice behind the American actor for Russian audiences. He has dubbed more than two hundred films. It is demanding, technical work that requires pinpoint precision to match breathing to the movement of lips on screen. But Burunov didn't want to be just a canned voice for big foreign blockbusters.

Aviation lost an officer and cinema gained an impassive face.

His stint on the TV show Big Difference in 2008 was the turning point. There he parodied hundreds of public figures with astonishing technical cruelty. And although fame reached him through mockery, the industry began to see in him more than a simple voice impersonator. But mass recognition would still take a few more years to materialize in front of the camera.

The colonel who hated his luck

In 2016, the series The Policeman from Rublyovka permanently changed his career. Burunov played Vladimir Yakovlev, a police commander driven to distraction by the incompetence and wealth of his subordinates. The character was a volcano of bile and frustration that connected with an audience tired of flawless heroes. He made audiences sympathize with a hysterical corrupt man thanks to a command of comic timing that few actors in Eastern Europe can match.

And the whole country started calling him by the name of his character.

From there, commercial film took him in. In 2017 he appeared in The Last Warrior, a Disney production in Russia that broke local box office records. Burunov played Vodyanoy, a mythical creature built with computer graphics, but his gestures and voice were perfectly recognizable beneath the layers of digital effects. The actor realized that his ordinary look, far from the leading-man mold, was his greatest asset for physical comedy.

But being typecast in broad comedy began to weigh on him. So he sought projects where darkness outweighed the cheap joke. Because Burunov is, above all, a method actor who uses comedy to hide a deep, structural melancholy.

The Maturity of Dry Drama

In 2023 he appeared in the series Slovo Patsana. Krov na asfalte, a cultural phenomenon that dissected youth gang violence in the late Soviet Union. Burunov played the father of two of the leads. In this production he dropped the shouting and grimaces to deliver a dry, painful portrait of a man watching his family fall apart without understanding the rules of the new world. His performance in the eighth episode of the series is considered one of the highlights of Russian television fiction of that decade.

It was a smart move to step away from parody.

In 2024 he premiered the musical adaptation of The Bremen Town Musicians, where he took on the role of the King. It is a big-budget production that uses complex facial prosthetics and carefully choreographed musical numbers. Despite the heavy makeup, his ability to convey pathos and authority remains the film's central pillar. Burunov has learned to manage his screen presence by choosing projects that mix family films with harsh social dramas.

By 2025, he has scheduled two feature films in which he serves as creative consultant as well as lead actor. His current contract with Russian streaming platforms includes exclusivity clauses that limit his appearances on broadcast television. The estimated budget of his latest production exceeds 15 million euros in direct filming costs.
