The Footballer Who Ended Up on Stage

Alexander Petrov dropped out of his economics studies in Pereslavl-Zalessky to move to Moscow with no real Plan B. The year was 2008, and his only obsession was getting into the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (GITIS). Before that, his life revolved around football, until a serious knee injury took him off the pitch for good.

In 2012 he completed his training under Leonid Heifetz. Luck came quickly that same year, when he landed his first major role in the series Poka tsvetet paporotnik. He wasn't chasing quick fame, but his face fit perfectly with what the Russian industry needed at the time.

The Russian box office was at his feet.

His debut at the Yermolova Theatre in Moscow in 2013 gave him hands-on experience with the classics. Under the direction of Oleg Menshikov, he learned that physical intensity was his best tool. So while other actors pursued subtlety, Petrov opted for a visceral, direct style that connected with young audiences.

The Monopoly of the Big Screen

The release of Attraction in 2017 marked a shift in the scale of his projects. The sci-fi film directed by Fyodor Bondarchuk grossed more than $18 million. That success put him in a position where he could choose scripts with almost total freedom in his home country.

Between 2017 and 2019 his work pace was frantic. He shot the Gogol trilogy, in which he played the famous writer in a dark, fantastical version. Then came T-34 in 2018. This war film broke box office records in Russia, reaching 2,200 million rubles at the box office.

His method is to avoid rehearsing too much.

Petrov prefers instinct to constant technical analysis. So in 2019, he decided to take a chance on Text, a raw psychological drama that steered clear of big explosions and digital effects. The film dealt with identity theft through a mobile phone, and it earned him the Golden Eagle Award for Best Actor.

Jumping to Europe and the Polanski factor

Luc Besson was the first to give him a major international break in Anna during 2019. Although his role was supporting, it taught him how shoots worked beyond Russian borders. The real breakthrough came a few years later.

In 2023, he joined the ensemble cast of The Palace under the direction of Roman Polanski. Playing a Russian mobster in a luxury Swiss hotel over the New Year's Eve of 1999 was a different kind of stylistic exercise. The film received mixed reviews at festivals, but his presence in Venice confirmed that Petrov was no longer just a local phenomenon.

And the risk kept climbing.

In 2024 he came under the direction of Kirill Serebrennikov for Limonov: The Ballad. In this project Petrov brings to life Eduard Limonov, the poet and political dissident who lived between Moscow, New York and Paris. Filming was complicated by the international political climate, but the film ended up premiering in the official selection at Cannes.

In September 2023, he announced his marriage to Viktoria Antonova after just a few months of dating. The news surprised specialized media because it came shortly after his breakup with actress Stasya Miloslavskaya. Petrov signed an exclusive contract with the production company Waterfall in 2024 to develop his own personal projects.
