Marina Aleksandrova was born at a military base in Hungary and ended up ruling imperial Russia on screen.

Her father was a Soviet army officer. That family discipline explains why, at seventeen, she set off for Moscow to study drama without her parents' permission. She enrolled at the Shchukin School and, before finishing her first year, she had already landed her first major film role.

In 2001, she shot Severnoe siyanie alongside established actors. She wasn't desperate for fame, but the industry quickly noticed her icy gaze and her ability to hold silence in front of the camera.

And the gamble paid off.

The Crown of the Tsars and the Weight of the Set

Her portrayal of Catherine the Great in the series Ekaterina brought her visibility that went beyond the borders of Eastern Europe. She filmed the first season in 2014 and spent nearly a decade tied to the character. Nine years of intense shoots to complete four installments that sold to more than one hundred countries.

But the physical work was exhausting. The corsets weighed several kilos, and sixteen-hour days in icy palaces eventually took a toll on her health. So between seasons, she looked for radically different projects so she wouldn't get stuck in the eighteenth century.

She moved to Poland in 2003 to film Stara basn. Kiedy slonce bylo bogiem, wanting to test herself in other languages. She speaks Hungarian and Russian with complete ease. In 2011, she left the Sovremennik Theatre after five years of daily performances in Moscow.

It was a risky decision.

She wanted to focus on film and on raising her children. In 2012, her first child was born in a clinic in the United States to avoid the harassment of the Russian press in local hospitals. She returned to work a few months later to fulfill her pending advertising and film contracts.

From the Steppe to Auteur Projects

In 2022, she took part in the historical film Amanat, playing Maria Olenina. Filming took place on location in the Caucasus under extreme weather conditions that forced the production to be delayed by several weeks. Realism in Russian period cinema rarely allows for cardboard sets.

In 2023, she starred in the series Posledniy bogatyr. Nasledie, where she swapped drama for pure fantasy. Her role in this project was brief but essential to the season's main storyline.

Her contract for the production of Ekaterina. Favority in 2023 included a temporary exclusivity clause for national television. The series had a budget of 500 million rubles, partly funded by the state film fund.
