Alexandra Jensen didn't need a hundred-page script for the Australian industry to stop seeing her as a promising newcomer. In 2022, the premiere of Talk to Me at the Adelaide Film Festival changed how people saw her ability to carry psychological horror without resorting to cheap screams. Playing Jade required a restraint that few actors of her generation manage with such dryness.
And the audience responded.
That film by the Philippou brothers grossed $92 million worldwide on a tiny budget. Jensen brought the grounding the plot needed, a story that flirted with the supernatural. But her path didn't begin on a horror film set or under the lights of Hollywood.
Her first serious steps came on national television. In 2019 she joined the cast of Frayed, a dramedy set in the 1980s in which she played Abby. Filming was split between London and Australia. She worked with Sarah Kendall and learned that comedic timing is really a matter of math and silence.
Before shooting Frayed, she spent years training at the Hunter School of the Performing Arts in Newcastle. There she came to understand that acting isn't a matter of ego but of pure technique. In Australian public schools, discipline often matters more than the glitter of the red carpet.
Television gave her the craft.
In 2021 she took part in Amazing Grace, playing Sophia, a young pregnant woman in a complex hospital setting. It was a brief role, but it helped casting directors note her name for supporting parts with real dramatic weight. So when the chance to jump into international film came, she already had the necessary experience.
The industry tends to typecast those who succeed in horror, but Jensen broke that pattern quickly. In 2023 she joined the second season of The Newsreader to bring to life a character who had nothing to do with possessions or embalmed hands. Playing an ambitious intern in a news newsroom in 1987 allowed her to explore a different kind of vulnerability.
Because success in Australia is often the mandatory stepping stone to the United States. Jensen had already had contact with international productions in 2022 when she appeared in Joe vs. Carole, the Peacock miniseries about the Tiger King phenomenon. But her priority always seems to be the script over the quick paycheck.
At the end of 2023, her participation in new scripted projects was confirmed, keeping her home base in Sydney. Critics often praise her gaze. She can convey pure anxiety without moving a single facial muscle.
The distribution deal for her best-known film was closed at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival for close to five million dollars after a bidding war among major studios.
