Alycia Debnam-Carey landed in Los Angeles at eighteen with a TV camera following her for an Australian documentary. She had no job and no contacts in California. She only had classical percussion training and ten years of small roles in Sydney.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2012, she was close to starring in The Carrie Diaries, but the role ended up going to AnnaSophia Robb. That rejection forced her to stay on the audition circuit while her visa was running out. Still, her look soon fit the genre productions looking for fresh faces for the global market.
In 2014, she appeared in the disaster movie Into the Storm. It was a mid-budget project that performed well at the box office and put her on the radar of casting directors at major American networks. That shoot was her first real experience with the logistics of major studios.
Her entrance into The 100 during 2014 was not planned to last more than a couple of episodes. Her performance as Lexa sparked a fan movement that the production didn't manage well. The impact was so strong that the character's death in 2016 sparked global protests and academic debates about representation on screen.
That abrupt exit was not a creative whim of the writers. Debnam-Carey had already signed a contract to star in another franchise on the AMC network. The overlapping schedules made it impossible for her to keep both jobs at the same time.
In 2015, she joined the cast of Fear the Walking Dead to play Alicia Clark. Over seven seasons, she led one of cable television's most demanding productions. She filmed exactly one hundred episodes before announcing her departure from the series in 2022.
Her work pace didn't slow down.
She was looking for room for shorter projects with greater dramatic weight outside the horror genre. So she decided to return to her roots to find stories that required a more intimate and less physically demanding performance.
In 2023, she starred in The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart alongside Sigourney Weaver. It marked her return to Australia to work on a big-budget production adapting Holly Ringland's novel. The series showed audiences a restrained performance, far from the pure action scenes of her earlier years.
That same year, she led the cast of Saint X on Hulu. The shoot took place in the Dominican Republic and explored the consequences of a disappearance in a luxury vacation setting. Critics praised her ability to sustain psychological suspense without relying on big special effects.
In 2024, she appeared in It's What's Inside, which had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. The film steps away from conventional streaming formats in favor of a conceptual science fiction script. It's a project that shifts her career strategy toward auteur independent cinema.
The production of It’s What’s Inside was sold to Netflix for 17 million dollars after its festival run.
