Anna Diop

Landing in Houston and the casting years

Anna Diop was born in Dakar in 1988. At six years old, she landed in Houston without speaking a word of English and with no contacts in the entertainment industry. She didn't come from a family of performers and had no set plan, but she learned the language by watching comedies on local television.

Her first speaking role came in 2006 on the series Everybody Hates Chris. It was a brief appearance that barely covered a month's rent. At the time, the industry offered actresses of African descent only highly stereotyped supporting roles.

She spent almost a decade jumping from pilot to pilot.

In 2015, she landed a regular contract for The Messengers. The series was canceled after a single season due to low ratings. But that technical failure allowed her to enter the FOX network's archives for the franchise 24: Legacy in 2017.

Online Hate and the Orange Fire

In 2018, Diop's life changed with a contract with the DC Universe streaming platform. She was cast as Starfire in the series Titans, and the announcement sparked a racist harassment campaign on social media. The reason was that her skin did not match the orange color of the original comic book drawing.

She decided to close her public profiles and focused on filming the action scenes without responding to provocation. She knew the physical work would speak for her on screen.

And the gamble paid off.

The series stayed on air until 2023 with four full seasons. During that period, Diop turned a supporting character into the dramatic core of the story. Her salary per episode exceeded 80,000 dollars in the final stages of the project, according to Warner Bros. production estimates.

Success in arthouse cinema

In 2022, the script for Nanny arrived. Director Nikyatu Jusu was looking for a woman who understood the displacement of Senegalese immigration in New York, and Diop fit every line of the text. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

It was the first time a Black woman director won that award in the drama category.

But commercial films kept knocking on her door with big-budget projects. In 2023, she shot The Book of Clarence alongside LaKeith Stanfield and Benedict Cumberbatch. The film cost 40 million dollars and was shot almost entirely on location in Matera, Italy.

It's not all spotlights and red carpets.

In 2024, Diop lives in Los Angeles and keeps a strict distance from the tabloid press. Her distribution deal with Amazon Studios for the film Nanny included a simultaneous release clause in 240 countries. The agreement closed for close to $7 million after a bidding war in the festival market.
