Antoinette Bower was born in the German city of Baden-Baden in 1932. Her family soon moved to London, where she acquired the flawless British diction that would serve as her passport to Hollywood. She wasn't chasing magazine-cover stardom but the steady work of everyday life on set.
She arrived on American television in the late 1950s. In 1961, she appeared in The Twilight Zone in the episode titled The Passerby. That story about Confederate soldiers after the Civil War fixed her face in the memory of the casting directors of the time.
And the phone didn't stop ringing.
Throughout the 1960s, she worked on nearly every production now considered a classic. She appeared in The Fugitive, Combat!, and Mission: Impossible. But her name became fixed in collective memory thanks to a role in Star Trek. In 1967, she played Sylvia in the episode Catspaw.
Bower appeared in more than ninety productions over four decades of steady work.
Her look allowed for an ambiguity that directors exploited in mystery plots. In 1971, she appeared in the film The Mephisto Waltz alongside Alan Alda and Jacqueline Bisset. The movie explored Satanism and the transmigration of souls in a setting of luxury and coldness.
But horror brought her back in a big way in 1980. In Prom Night she played the mother of Jamie Lee Curtis at the height of the slasher boom. It was one of the most profitable Canadian films of that period and helped a new generation discover her dramatic range.
The industry treated her as a reliable professional.
In 1981, she joined the cast of The Edge of Night, appearing in more than fifty episodes. The format didn't bother her, because she understood that television was the real engine of acting in the United States. For her, acting was a craft more than a mystical quest.
From the eighties on, her presence became less frequent but just as precise. In 1987, she appeared in an episode of Murder, She Wrote, and between 1989 and 1992 she worked regularly on the series Neon Rider. That was the final stretch of her public exposure, before she decided she had given the camera enough.
Bower chose a quiet retirement in Los Angeles. She has lived out of the spotlight since deciding to leave professional acting in the early 1990s. She never felt the need to explain her absence or to take part in forced nostalgia circuits.
Her last recorded credit in a fiction production dates from 1992.
