Asha Banks faced a full auditorium at just eight years old. In 2012, she joined the cast of Les Misérables in London, playing young Éponine. That role at the Queens Theatre was her first real contact with an industry that often devours child prodigies.
She preferred to wait.
Unlike other child actors, Banks balanced her education with occasional roles in major stage productions. In 2015, she appeared in Annie and later joined the cast of The Sound of Music. These years of theater training gave her a technical control over her voice that would prove decisive for her future film work.
But the stage was not her final goal.
In 2022, the British industry began to see something more in her than a musical actress. That year she won the role of Princess Pamina in the film The Magic Flute. The production was ambitious, and Banks had to shoot at the Salzburg studios surrounded by an international cast that included names such as Iwan Rheon.
That experience in Austria changed her perception of the shooting pace compared to the stage.
That same 2022, she joined the series Rebel Cheer Squad: A Get Even Series, produced for the BBC and Netflix. She played Grace, and this is where she definitively moved away from the child actress label. The series demanded a different physicality and a far more naturalistic acting tone than the one required in London's West End.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024, her name hit international headlines thanks to the TV adaptation of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder. Banks played Cara Ward in this BBC production, based on Holly Jackson’s bestselling novel. Her performance provided the emotional counterpoint needed in the mystery plot led by Emma Myers.
Before this shoot, Banks had already worked on the series The Serial Killer’s Wife for 2023. In this project, she played Max and shared the screen with Annabel Scholey. It was a job of four intense episodes that allowed her to explore a much darker, more adult register before returning to big-budget youth fiction.
Film was the next logical step.
Banks's career steps away from the explosive, empty growth of social media. It rests on a solid technical foundation and a selection of projects that prioritize production quality over screen time. In 2023, she briefly returned to the stage with The Sound of Music at the Chichester Festival Theatre to stay in direct contact with live audiences.
The production of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder set its base of operations at the Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol over a period of six months of filming.
