Ashlynn Yennie spent weeks crawling around a film set in the Netherlands, physically linked to two other actors. It was in 2009 that she accepted the role of Jenny in The Human Centipede (First Sequence). That project by Tom Six wasn't after critical acclaim but a gut-wrenching reaction from the audience.
Before moving to Los Angeles, she studied at Macalester College in Minnesota, where she trained in dance and theater. But academic theory was of little use when she faced a shoot where the script was kept secret from much of the crew. The film earned little at the box office, but its life in the home video market and word of mouth made her a phenomenon that was hard to ignore.
And then the phone stopped ringing for conventional roles.
During the filming of the sequel in 2011, she played a fictional version of herself. In The Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence), the actress explored the limits of metafiction within B-movie horror. It was an unusual move, since few actors agree to return to a franchise whose appeal rests on the physical degradation of its leads.
After the human centipede phase, the actress turned to independent genre films. In 2014, she appeared in The Scribbler alongside Katie Cassidy and Michelle Trachtenberg. The project tried to blend psychological thriller with comic book aesthetics but did not achieve the commercial impact it hoped for in U.S. theaters.
The entertainment industry tends to pigeonhole those who debut with such extreme projects, so Yennie chose to diversify her presence on the small screen. In 2015 she shot several episodes of the series NCIS and began a prolific period in TV movies produced by networks such as Lifetime.
It was a risky bet to avoid being forgotten.
In 2019 she starred in The Wrong Mommy, playing a mother who suspects the intentions of her nanny. Productions of this kind of domestic suspense allowed her to work steadily, far from the controversy that surrounded her early years in the industry. These are fast shoots lasting barely three weeks that demand absolute technical efficiency.
Yennie soon realized that relying solely on casting directors' calls was a mistake in Hollywood. In 2017 she got involved in the drama The Ghost and the Whale, where she shared the cast with Tippi Hedren. At this stage she became interested in the financing and distribution processes of films with budgets below two million dollars.
Because independent film demands a physical endurance she had already shown early in her career. In 2021 she took part in Antidote, a horror thriller that brought her back to her roots in the genre but with a much more commercial and less experimental approach than her work with Tom Six.
And the strategy allowed her to stay active without interruption.
In 2022, she joined the cast of The Last Manhunt, a contemporary Western produced and written by Jason Momoa. The film was shot in desert locations in California and focused on a true story about the Native American culture of 1909. The production had a crew of eighty people and received a limited release on digital platforms.
