The Double That Broke the System

In 2023, Atsumi Tanezaki took home the awards for Best Lead Actress and Best Supporting Actress at the same Seiyuu Awards ceremony.

No one had achieved that milestone before. This recognition validated a career that began with plenty of doubts and little fanfare in Oita Prefecture. Tanezaki decided she wanted to act after watching Sailor Moon, but her path to the recording studios of Tokyo was far from direct.

She spent years working low-paying jobs to pay for her training. She didn't have an explosive debut as a teenager like some other stars in the industry. In fact, her name only began to gain real traction once she was already past the typical age of new rising talents.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2012, she landed her first major role in Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, playing Asako Natsume. That role showed her ability to portray celebrities with complex inner emotional lives without relying on screaming or exaggeration. But it was in 2017 that her career took off, thanks to The Ancient Magus' Bride.

The Voice That Doesn't Sound Like the Same Voice

Tanezaki's work is built on making the actor disappear. In 2022, she brought Anya Forger to life in Spy x Family, and her performance moved away from the high registers typical of child characters. She opted for a nasal, slightly rough, nuanced voice that suited the character's telepathy.

Many viewers took months to realize that the pink-haired girl was voiced by the same actress who plays Rio Futaba in Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai. That ability to modify the texture of her vocal cords is what sets her apart from voice actors who only build a recognizable personal brand.

And she did it again.

In 2023, she took on the lead role in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. The technical challenge here was enormous (playing an ancient elf who barely shows emotion yet carries an eternal grief). Tanezaki used a flat, almost breathless tone to convey a longevity that feels alien to humans.

Specialized critics noted that her performance as Frieren avoided easy sentimentality. Tanezaki prefers to work through silence and pauses rather than personal showmanship. That's why she has become the go-to choice for directors seeking extreme naturalness in fantasy settings.

Her working method involves a deep study of the breathing of the drawings. Before recording, she analyzes how the character's lungs would move based on their physical design. This obsession with technical detail earned her two major awards in a single year.

A Low Profile Outside the Studio

Unlike some of her peers, Tanezaki keeps a careful distance from fan culture. She doesn't regularly appear on variety shows or seek media stardom beyond her characters. In interviews, she tends to talk more about the challenges of vocal frequency than about her private life.

Her influence on the industry is undeniable, though. In 2021, she starred in Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song, playing an artificial intelligence across a century of history. The role required her to evolve her voice from robotic coldness to an almost complete humanity by the final stretch of the series.

It was a real test of endurance for her vocal cords.

In October 2023, she announced her marriage to fellow voice actor Yuu Miyazaki. The news was shared briefly on her social media, without any major exclusives or photo spreads. Tanezaki still lives in Tokyo and maintains a workload of more than ten productions a year across TV series, video games and animated films.

Her contract for the second season of Frieren was signed under strict technical confidentiality clauses. In 2024, her schedule included recordings for more than fifteen different projects, including radio advertising collaborations. On the MyAnimeList database platform alone, she has more than 500,000 users following every move of her professional career.
