Synopsis of The Apothecary Diaries

Maomao is a young woman who grew up in the capital's pleasure district, where she learned medicine from the people around her. After being kidnapped, she ends up sold as a low-ranking laundry maid in the Imperial Palace. Determined to serve her two-year contract in anonymity, she discovers a mysterious illness affecting the emperor's young children. She suspects the cause may be the toxic face powder used by the concubines, and her medical knowledge puts her in an environment where speaking up can cost her dearly. The story takes place in a fictional country inspired by Imperial China. Based on the light novel by Hyūganatsu, the series airs on Nippon TV.
