Ava Baya didn't chase the camera desperately. In 2022, director Jaume Balagueró placed her in front of the terror of Venus, and audiences discovered a face that held the frame without blinking. It was a sharp entrance into genre cinema that served as her calling card on the big screen.
That was the start of something serious.
Before reaching that point, she spent years training in acting and music. For her, art was never a choice between disciplines but a way of making sense of the noise around her. She studied theater and immersed herself in sound creation before casting directors started memorizing her name.
But her training didn't end in acting classes. In 2020 she took part in Campamento Albanta, where she learned that television demands a mental quickness that schools don't always teach. So she applied that agility to every project that followed.
Her major breakout came in 2023 with the release of Un cuento perfecto on Netflix. In this adaptation of Elísabet Benavent's novel, she played Bárbara. She did it by steering clear of the usual archetypes of big-budget romantic comedies. She gave a supporting character real weight through restraint.
And the gamble paid off.
Her ability to convey fragility and strength at the same time caught the attention of the Spanish industry. In 2024 she joined the cast of 4 estrellas for public television. There she had to adapt to the frantic pace of a daily series, where there is no time for deep rehearsal. Shooting one episode a day demands a technical discipline that few actors of her generation maintain with confidence.
At that stage of her career, her workload multiplied. But she chose not to give up her work as an independent creator. She understands that the industry can be voracious without a personal project to fall back on when the phone stops ringing.
Her stage name is more than just a credit on movie posters. Ava Baya also works as a music project, exploring sounds that range from pop to more experimental textures. She has released tracks such as Tú me dejas and Fuego with a carefully curated aesthetic.
She isn't interested in fame for its own sake.
These songs show a much rawer side than her fictional characters. But she prefers to keep both worlds in separate compartments, although the aesthetic of her music videos sometimes creeps into her photo shoots. Her music features minimalist electronic production that avoids the easy hooks of radio pop.
Before filming, she reads the script looking for the cracks in the character. For her scenes for television in 2024, she used an Alexa Mini LF with fixed lenses camera setup to better capture the detail of her expressions. The contract called for ten-hour days shooting outdoors in natural light.
