Aya Asahina

Speed as a work method

Aya Asahina didn't make it to Tokyo's film sets by luck in a shopping mall. In school on Awaji Island, she ran the 100-meter dash in 12.8 seconds. That sprinter's power shapes how she approaches acting, since she'd rather go through real exhaustion than fake it with technical simulation.

In 2014, she began working as an exclusive model for Ray magazine. That stage gave her the visibility she needed on newsstands, but her ultimate goal was always big-budget fiction. Her acting debut in 2017 with the drama Tokyo Alice proved that her presence worked beyond the photo shoots.

The asphalt of Hyogo was her first school.

The streaming twist

In 2020, she played Kuina in the Netflix series Alice in Borderland. She appeared on screen in a blue bikini and with a fighting technique that left many conventional action actors in the dust. She did not use stunt doubles for most of her fight sequences because her athletics background let her endure 14-hour shooting days.

That production changed her market reach. But Asahina avoided being typecast as a martial arts expert and chose projects where physical effort carried dramatic weight. In 2022, she starred in the film Red Shoes.

She trained in boxing for months so she wouldn't look like an amateur.

Director Toshiro Saiga demanded that the ring fights be as raw as possible. Asahina took on the challenge of playing a single mother trying to win back custody of her daughter through professional sports. Japanese critics praised her ability to convey real pain in the training scenes.

Contracts and Private Life

Her career didn't stop after her international success on digital platforms. In 2019, she had already explored the world of aviation in the series Runway 24, where she played a co-pilot. She balanced those shoots with her work as a host on variety shows.

Discipline is her most distinctive trait.

She married dancer Kenjiro Yamashita in July 2021 after two years of a relationship kept secret. The couple avoided sensationalist headlines and managed their private life with a discretion rarely seen in Japanese entertainment.

In March 2024, she announced the birth of her first child. The agency Ikushima Planning manages her image rights and advertising contracts under strict exclusivity terms. Her profile at the agency still lists a height of 171 centimeters and a specialty in long jump.
