Paul Hewson didn't choose his stage name. It was a neighborhood nickname based on a hearing aid shop in Dublin called Bona Vox. In 1976, he answered an ad on his high school bulletin board, and that decision changed the course of popular music. That kid looking for an escape from gray Ireland ended up leading a band that was filling stadiums before turning twenty-five.
Music was only the beginning.
But Bono always wanted to go beyond the microphone. In 1988, the film Rattle and Hum tried to capture the spirit of his American tour. The result was a documentary that mixed black-and-white with color but received harsh reviews for its alleged arrogance. Critics called it pretentious. Despite the attacks, the film took in 8.6 million dollars during its first weekend in the United States.
In 2000, the singer decided to try his luck as a screenwriter and producer. He wrote the story for The Million Dollar Hotel and convinced Wim Wenders to direct it. The cast included Mel Gibson and Milla Jovovich. It was an absolute financial disaster that barely recovered a fraction of its budget. The specialized press at the Berlin Film Festival showed no mercy toward the plot.
And the gamble paid off in the sound department.
The soundtrack of that film won a Grammy and proved that his instinct for melody was stronger than his skill as a screenwriter. So he decided to space out his appearances on the big screen. In 2007, he played Doctor Robert in Across the Universe, where he covered Beatles songs with a psychedelic aesthetic. He wasn't looking for the spotlight but for nuance.
His work outside the stage is measured in cold data and high-level meetings. Through the ONE organization, he has pressed governments to cancel debts of developing countries. In 2005, his efforts helped persuade the G8 to agree to 50,000 million dollars in aid to fight poverty. He doesn't limit himself to benefit concerts, because he prefers to negotiate directly with the people who own the capital.
It wasn't all applause.
His name surfaced in the Paradise Papers in 2017 over investments in a shopping center in Lithuania. It damaged his image as a global philanthropist for a while. But the musician responded with transparency and restructured his financial arrangements to avoid further legal controversy. In 2021, he returned to animated film, voicing the lion Clay Calloway in the movie Sing 2.
In 2022, he published his memoir Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story. The book looks back on his career without the filter of publicity and openly admits the big mistakes he made managing his personal brand. The documentary Kiss the Future, produced by Matt Damon in 2023, recounts his involvement with the siege of Sarajevo. The film runs 103 minutes, and its international distribution deal was reportedly closed for close to five million dollars.
